jackie starr Originally from Marblehead, Massachusetts, I moved to Boston in 1983 to attend Berklee college of music for a two year program. In 1985 I joined Bim Skala Bim; a ska reggae band, opening for such greats as Fishbone, Ziggy Marley, the Skatalites, Bad Manners, Madness, the Bad Brains, and 10,000 maniacs. We had gone on 3 U.S. tours, and toured England and Scotland with Bad Manners for the 1988 International Ska Festival. We recorded one album titled Tuba City. In between shows and touring I worked for a short stint at the famous Rounder Records. I moved to San Diego, California in 1990. With friends I met at local shows, I created Contra Guerra. In the three short years we were together as a band we played countless shows in San Diego, and Los Angeles. Opening for the Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield, Morphine, Giant Sand, and Everclear. We recorded two songs for a Blindspot Records compilation called Staring at the Sun Vol.1, one for a 45 single for Cargo/Earth Music, and a live performance for the Casbah Rock Club Compilation CD called Musica Del Diablo. Contra Guerra broke up in the fall of 1994. I started playing solo acoustic shows during and soon after the breakup of my band. I had a catalog of songs built up that were not yet recorded. Cargo/Earth Music called me to do one of my songs for another compilation cd Mud on the Wheel. This cut got regular airplay on the local show on 91X in San Diego. favorite experience of all time has to be when i opened for John Doe of the band X at the Casbah. I am looking forward to recording more and hopefully tour the west coast again.
