Aggressive Melodic Black Metal band, with a dark compelling environmentBand/artist history
INVOKE - Aggressive Melodic Black Metal band, with a dark compelling environment, started with the following members:
Reborn (Voice and rhythm guitar)
Raul Costa (Bass guitar)
Ceição (Solo guitar)
Riwall (keyboards)
And later Caveirinha (drums)
All started with an idea, to form a band; nothing was plan, just a simple project, not even the ideas for a name existed, only comments and vacant proposals in air.
But this natural process, of a band to give the first steps for its constitution and formation, started to develop a little before 1996 when INVOKE still not even knew its identity. They started developing a structure deciding the functions of each member, still with very vacant ideas, that later, would be develop.
The phase of indetermination and doubt is exceeded, and INVOKE members, started looking for bands and elements which identified them, something a little more complicated because all the members had acquired different tastes in the musical field, that becomes, this first phase, sufficiently complicated in this construction process.
After wandering from studio to studio and starting to built music and ideas, all this converged into a production and recording of a demo-tape, “Where the Foreland Becomes Holy Ground” with approximately 40min of deep Melodic Doom, and four tracks 1-“Between Shadows” (intro), 2-“Solidão”, 3-“Bride in Black” and 4-“Through the Darkest Forest” all recordings take place in Hipolab Studios. Later, is made one remake of all tracks and added one more track, the 5º “Ancestral Angel”. After this recording, where prevail the several influences of INVOKE such as: Cradle of Filth, Heavenwood, Theatre Of Tragedy, Crematory, Old Mans Child and others The band was now ready to participate in a gig but, need a more organization and control of the rehearsals, for this INVOKE had to change to another place/studio, and they change to “James Academy Guitar” here the band could rehearse, and do all the work, with more quality.
Some time is spended in studio but, some time latter, INVOKE carries through their first concert in "4º Carcavelos Rock ' 98", and within the same month, right after, “The Metal Night” in Ponto de Encontro, with IMPURITY (concert of joint organization between the two bands).
The changes in INVOKE, started to appear soon in their second year of existence. The guitar player Ceição (founding member), deflects away from the band for personal reasons, and the band sees itself for the first time, with a complicated situation. But, the work continued in despite of the lack of the guitar player, which is felt in many production elements.
More concerts are carried out by INVOKE, after the departure of Ceição, “New Generation concert”, “Tocabrir ' 99 - Metal Night” and “Battle of Bands”.
In May of 1999, the band, enters in contact with Speedster and proposes him, entering INVOKE as a solo guitar player, the decision is made and the band find’s it self again, with two guitar players. The rehearsals are retaken, for remakes and new compositions with the new element.
After this pause the band comes back to the gigs, and the first one that is carried through with Speedster is in the "Festa do Caloiro". After the concert some dissatisfaction is felt but, the work of production and improvement of the tracks continues.
In March of 2000 the band gives one of the most remarkable concerts, in "Tocabir ' 2000 - Metal Night" and receives a good review by the Media. Delight and desire returns to INVOKE.
In this exactly year it is overcome decision to record a demo-cd but, still with some doubts on some aspects that later would be decided. Still with some ideas in mind the band ponders the entrance of a feminine voice but, after some experiences this hypothesis is moved away. And in the summer of 2000 appears "From Within" composed by 4 tracks: 1-"Infinity ", 2-"Bride in Black"(one remake of the previous demo-cd), 3-"Dark Horde" and 4-"Strange Sceneries". After this recording, INVOKE, suffers the most significant changes.
In December of 2000 the drummer Caveirinha abandons the band for personal divergences, this fact, affects the band who continued to work but, with a rhythm of assay much more reduced. Some attempts to substitute the drummer had been made but, with no success. Only on March of 2001, it’s found a substitute; David enters in the rhythm of the band who recovers fast enough the lost time. But, the changes come back to succeed themselves and with a concert set for May of 2001 the drummer David, moves away from the band without any explanation and leaves INVOKE, in a complicated situation. This gig is cancelled.
Going through an arduous period, the band suffers again, new changes. The departure of Raul Costa (founder member) occurs in June of 2001, for musical divergence’s and coincides with the audition of a drummer, December (joining the band later) and with Spiritus (ex-Dogma) also joins the band but as keyboard together with Riwall.
On September of 2001, Speedster abandons the band, for personal reasons. But, one more time, coincides with the entrance of Victor Figueiredo, taking the place of Raul Costa in the bass guitar.
These displacements would cause a profound change in the general sound of INVOKE.
With three new members, the band enters in a new phase of studio work, preparing new remakes and the creation of new tracks. The rehearsals take a very high rhythm of work and the band starts to establish objectives and assuming, each time more, a musical feature inside the Melodic Black Metal. The recording of a new demo-cd, would be also, in the plans of the band and it would be the new face of the renewed INVOKE (but, this option appeared a little later).
With all aspects agreed and with the help of André Marques and Pedro Marques (belonging both to the band Dispatch Note) the recordings would begin and been made, from January to February of 2002. The mix and after-production would be made in the end of March, by Reborn and Invoke. The second demo-cd "Looking Through Me" was ready, composed for 8 tracks: 1-"Endless Looking", 2 - "Looking Through Me", 3-"Strange Sceneries"(remake of the previous demo-cd), 4-"Much So Mysterious", 5-"Times Delusion", 6-"Odin" (instrumental music), 7-"Bride in Black" (remake of the previous demo-cd), 8-"Fallacy". In this demo-cd is distinguished the participation of Aradia (of the band Dispatch Note) and Ruben (of the band Gwydion). Still occurring the mixtures of the demo-cd, INVOKE participates in the "Festival of garage bands", in February of 2002.
Soon after finishing the demo-cd, the band participates in "Metal fest", in April of 2002, where it looked for the diffusion of their work (the gig was organized by the band with the participation, once more, of André Marques and Pedro Marques, as sound technicians and Aradia (vocal participation only in the song "Bride in Black").
In May of 2002 the band participates in the "1ºst Meeting of garage bands".
The band follows with the construction of new tracks but, always with intention to participate in more concerts and the chance appears in July of 2002, to participate in "Metal Force" in 4Play bar that is immediately accepted.
In September of 2002 Raul Rita enters INVOKE, as solo guitar player. And in October of 2002 already participates with the band in the "Festival Rock Arrimál".
INVOKE returns to the studio to prepare the new tracks, for presentation in the near concerts and possible recording of the band first album (without certain date of release).
Before the next concert, the band, suffers again more transformations, Victor Figueiredo abandons INVOKE by personal reasons and obliges the band to find a new bass player with urgency since approaches a concert.
On January 2003, the band carries out a concert organized by the “From Ancients so Deep Concerts” with Secrecy and Black Widows but, with Raul Rita in the bass. In a place fulfill of enthusiasts, INVOKE presented some of the tracks produced in studio, and the public reaction was very significant. On February 2003, the new member Anonymous God, enters to INVOKE, taking the vacant place, yield by Victor Figueiredo.
The modifications come back to the band again, and Raul Rita leaves INVOKE. The work with the new bass player, Anonymous God, continues, as well as the construction of new tracks.
After the work done, with Anonymous God, the band prepares it self for a new concert in May of 2003 in the Caixa Económica Operária, at Lisbon, again with Black Widows, but also with Ethereal. The curious metalhead fans were few in the gig but, the few ones give a strong support to INVOKE. Also the reviews, made to the concert by the media, where very important to the band.
The band decided to prepare the release of the new first length album, appointed to 2004. The album name was selected of a short list, agreeing all with: “Shred Resemblance”, related to the lyrics of the new work.
In September of 2003, INVOKE, where invited to participate in Zadoque Metal Fest, again with Ethereal and also with Arte Sacra and the Brazilian Antidemon. The gig was very poor, and with lots of problems. The concert started with a delay of 2 hours, and the bands where oblige to cute in their gig, on stage. It was a night to remember and to forget.
After the gig, INVOKE continued with the preparation of the new album, and in November enters a new member to the band, Blood Heart enters to the solo guitar, and the works with him started almost immediately.Have you performed in front of an audience?Yes Invoke is a stage band, and we like it a lot.
