Band/artist history
Reed: Drummer/Vocals I've been drumming for 20 years; but, what's more important is the number of quality practice hours within those years. I noticed the most significant improvements in my abilities under the instruction of Mr. Dennis Johnson while touring with Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps in '82 and '83. Drum Corps musicians are some of the best non-professional musicians in the world and this is where I came to the realization that class study is, by far, better than private lessons. During this time, Dennis Johnson, who is currently the Band Director of Robert E. Lee High School, introduced me to advanced technical rhythms and showed me how to practice for improvement. Mr. Johnson is an exceptional percussionist, drummer, musician, and a very demanding instructor. I joined the Air Force in '84. While waiting to enter active duty, Samuel Frederick, the Percussion Instructor at Troy State University invited me to play with the Troy State University band. My first duty station in the Air Force ended up being close enough to Troy to allow me to continue performing with Troy's band for the next five years. Troy State University has one of the best music departments in the South and I expanded my technical arsenal and "chops" while learning from and playing with Samuel Frederick. In 1989, I auditioned and entered the Air Force band at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, where I played percussion instruments in the concert band and drumset in the rock band with some very talented professional musicians. Here's some achievements and events I've picked up along the way: High School Percussion section leader - three years 15 medals for solos & ensembles, including two all-state competitions and one Alabama Honor Band Jazz band drummer 1982 - Auditioned for Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps, Montgomery, Alabama, where I toured almost every eastern state and Canada competing against other Drum Corps almost everyday of the summer ending with the World Championships in Montreal in August. 1983 - Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps Drum Section Leader After High School Taught several high school summer band camps in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia Taught private lessons to high school and college students Performed with Troy State University's band for five years ('84 - '88) while on active duty in the Air Force Performed for President Bush twice (once with Troy's band; once with the Air Force band) Attended the 1988 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in San Antonio, Texas which had clinics from longtime great drumming professionals (Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Alex Acuna, Peter Erskine, Chester Thompson and Vinnie Calliuta). Received letters of praise from Alabama Governor George Wallace and Dr. John M. Long, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences at Troy State University, who was also the President of the American Bandmasters Association. 1989 - won first place in the instrumental solo category at the Tactical Air Command talent contest (drumset solo). From there, went on to compete at the USAF Worldwide contest. 1989 - selected to tour with the Air Force entertainment group Tops In Blue at the USAF Worldwide talent contest. 1989 - selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America for volunteer work with high school and college bands, American Red Cross, and Special Olympics. 1990 - Auditioned and accepted into the USAF Military Airlift Command Band where I played percussion accessory instruments in the concert band and drumset in the rock band until mid-1992. - Been playing with iNu for the past 3 years - Performed with Bruce Willis on Sep 24, 2003 LINK: http://inurocks.com/images/Bruce%20Willis/photos.htm - Concert percussionist with the Capitol Sounds Concert Band (2001 - 2003) - Drummer for the Maxwell Dixieland Jazz Band in 2003 ED:Lead Guitar/Vocals My influences have been wide Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page, John Kay, Pat Travers, Robin Trower, Randy Roads, Eddie VanHalen, David Gilmore there are so many the list could go on for ever. Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, as often as possible. We have been playing clubs in the central Alabama area. We love to perform for people the more the better. We feel the energy of the crowd and we give it back. Our last show at the Key's in Montgomery was great, maybe the best yet. The crowd were on their feet and we loved giving them a show they would not soon forget.
