Bubbling quietly...
Band/artist history
Hess Scales hit the scene as a solo artist in the winter of 2005 after his house was raided by a local & federal joint drug task force. The END was to signal a new beginning..
Before his life was turned upside down by the authorities Hess rapped as an extension of his lifestyle. The lifestyle most who rap about have never truly lived.Claiming Cashville Ten-a-ki,( Nashville, TN) as his hometown Hess first began his music career in 2003 when as a member of the group U.C.S. he appeared on several mixtapes & compilations including Al Kapone presents Da Midsouth Compilation ..-O-Hits,& Cashvilles' Finest DVD soundtrack presented by Supreme.Just when positive things started happening for Hess & U.C.S.,the sky came crashing down, along with Hess's front door at the other end of a SWAT Team's battering ram.
The next 14 months as he awaited his fate were the darkest days in Hess Scales entire life. The uncertainty clouding his future might have been too much to bare if it weren't for the escape he found in putting his life on paper and adjusting the flow of his words to the tempo of the instrumentals in his ever-present Walkman.Hess sums up the time by saying,
"God filled me with a desire to create my music that was so strong it kept me from dwelling on the fact that I was facing up to 30 years in the penitentiary. It's what did at the time & continues to keep me focused.I was able to face my situation head on & not snitch on my friends because GOD filled me with courage, not because I am some super-thug."
During this period Hess found his voice & regained the swag he had lost during his fight for freedom. The end of '06 was to be a time filled with blessings & mercy from GOD above.Hess was sentenced to 8 years parole after a short prison term & around that time was also nominated for the Mix-tape Rookie of the year at the Southern Entertainment Awards for his well received mix-tape style album More Than a Mixtape Vol.1.Hosted by Hess's good friend, the notorious "Milwaukee Mack",Pimpin' Ken & mixed by Cashville's foremost club & mix-tape dj,DJ Whitey.Even though Hess did not win, it was a big honor to have been nominated in a category usually reserved for DJ's,& with his 1st solo mix-tape at that!
Hess has a lyrical yet relate-able style with a flow that can easily switch from laid back to confrontational. His topics vary, giving his listeners insight into the life of a hustler from many different angles.Court cases, near brushes with death & the everyday struggle to maintain have strengthened the resolve of this determined rap artist.Pitfalls & hurdles aside Hess has held his head high & learned from his mistakes.
"Hustling in any way where you have to look over your shoulder is a waste of time to me because the ends don't justify the means. I'll never knock the next man's hustle though. You do what you see as being best, but it's not for me.Not anymore. It' tempting though to get fast money because I was good at it & could easily do it again.I get that out of my system by rapping about it,from first hand experience & my point of view beacuse I could easily get popped again too.I was good at what I did but the police were better."
Hess Scales has appeared on collaborations along side Tim "Kamillain" Hill,Kingpin Skinny Pinp,Haystack, & Gangsta Boo among many others. He has also built up his Stage presence opening for established acts such as Maceo & performing at many unsigned talent showcases & album release parties.
Presently he is working on his breakout solo album titled,"Measured Response" & getting Ca$hco Inc. Clothing & Graphics Divisions off the ground.
With his considerable work ethic & the skills to match he is positioning himself to make a serious impact on the southern rap scene & with his songwriting & storytelling abilities he feels his music is universal enough to appeal to a much broader audience than regional boarders can constrain.
The year 08' has brought a Camoflage AwardSlept on Artist of the year nomination at the SEA's & more importantly some distance from the lifestyle he now intends to warn impressionable listeners about."You gotta sneak it in their on em' though.
"Hess says ,"If I'm going to tell you about my story then you are gonna hear about the trappings I fell into & the glamorous edge around them as well as the consequences. Many things about that lifestyle are great & that's why it's so easy to fall into it.You gotta have a reality check sometimes though.I plan to entice my listeners the same way the dopegame enticed me."
HessScales is working hard and applying his well honed hustling skills to become a player in the rap game.Look out for new releases coming before the end of '08 .
