Band/artist history
Heap Bio
Heap is an rock 'n roll band from NYC. They've existed in name since 1995 and seen several line-up changes in that time.
The current personnel are:
David Merrill, bass and vocals. David's first rock project was with Lester Bangs' and Mickey Leigh's band, Birdland, in 1977. He went on to play with Mickey in The Rattlers in the early '80's and toured with The Ramones, The Clash, The B-52's, Joan Jett, The Buzzcocks, XTC, and others. He stopped performing and developed a career as a recording engineer at Master Sound studios, where he has worked with Keith Richards, Placido Domingo, David Sanborn, REM, Tony Bennett and others. He joined with Heap in 2000 and is in the process of producing and engineering the upcoming Heap CD.
Frank Saitta, drums. Frank appeared on the debut STOP album with Mickey Leigh. After touring as a drum tech with The Ramones, he collaborated with C.J. Ramone and played on the debut album by Los Gusanos. Also played in The Plug Uglies with Handsome Dick Manitoba and Andy Shernoff of The Dictators. He joined Heap in 2002.
George Chambers, lead guitar and vocals. A native of Brooklyn, George played in a variety of hardcore bands in the '80's, and noise/art outfit Splungent in the early '90's. He played guitar with Heap from 1997-2000, before leaving the band to live in Dublin for a couple of years. Returned to the band in 2003.
Tim Heap, vocals and guitar. Tim came to NYC in '92 and has been writing songs and playing gigs with the band since '95. He started playing regularly at tiny venues like McGovern's Bar, eventually moving up to support slots at Coney Island High, Irving Plaza, and CBGB, opening for acts like The Dictators, Ronnie Spector, Joey Ramone, The Waldos, The Senders, and The Blue Chieftains.
Heap released one single "Shut It Out/Prison Parole & Prison" (Whizzo Records, 1996), and a full-length CD "Don't Call Us, We Already Broke Up" (In Stores Nowhere, 1998). They're currently working on another full-length for release in Fall 2003. This CD will feature material by the current line-up, as well as material recorded this past year featuring Mickey Leigh on guitar and Pat Carpenter on drums.
Mickey and Pat were involved with the band for 3 or so years, from '99 to '03. Mickey and Tim struck up a friendship in the mid-90's, and Heap opened for STOP, Mickey and Pat's band, many times. The two joined Heap as the rhythm section, with Mickey playing bass, in '99. Mickey then switched over to guitar when George departed for Ireland. Several of the songs on the upcoming CD were co-written by Mickey and Tim. Mickey took leave from the band in 2003 to collaborate with Legs McNeil on a book about the life of Mickey's brother, the late Joey Ramone. Pat left the band to pursue fatherhood. The band hopes to collaborate with Mickey on a new project upon the completion of his upcoming book.
