Folk Rock

Guru Monkey is a workshop band, which was loosely formed in 2005. The band is primarily based in Tsukuba, Kashima and Narita, Japan. Members include, J.Walker, lyrics, rhythm guitar, vocals, Joel Shawn, lead, rhythm, keyboards, production and various, Ken O'keefe, drums, and Bruno Shakir, bass, vocals and production.
Band/artist history
J wrote some songs and met Joel by chance after having not seen him for about 10 months. Joel subsequently offered to record the songs, which lead to the loose formation of Guru Monkey around 2005. The first CD, "Let's Be Reasonable About This" was produced in the same year. The second project, "Cause And Effect" started to take shape in 2006, and was completed in 2007. Ken joined the band for the second project, but is doing some work on the forthcoming remix and remastering of the first CD. In a sense, that puts him there from the beginning. Joel has worked on various other projects with his band, Blue Avenue, with Gavin Palmer and Ken. He has produced CDs for this band, and for the Boogie Sue band, out of Tokyo, with whom Ken also plays drums. Joel has produced some worthy solo CDs also - "Dark Way Home" 2005/6 and "Regine" 2007. Another Guru Monkey CD is in the initial stages.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
In various places, in various guises, but not as often as we'd like. It's very hard to get the members together at the same location at the same time. Members do play solo, or with other bands/projects, often.
Your musical influences
Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Ray Davies, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Neil Young, Daniel Lanois, The Animals, and others.
What equipment do you use?
Anything that works and isn't too knackered.
Anything else?
We'll think of something to put here eventually, I'm sure.
