Gravediggaz

Rising over the ongoing stress of mental and physical urban decay, Gee Street recording artists Gravediggaz return to planet Earth with a lethal mixture of sonic visions and audio prophecy on their second album The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel. Once mistakenly viewed as part of the now-faded "horrorcore" rap genre of a few years past, these hip-hop disciples continue to paint real-life pictures of the urban landscape as they see them. Recorded and mixed in New York and Los Angeles, the new album marks an important departure from the dark themes explored on their 1994 debut album 6 Feet Deep, and underlines the group's growth as a creative entity. Originally assembled as a pure force of energy designed to elevate hip-hop listeners (and bury the pretenders), Gravediggaz is a crew of well-respected artists who have pooled their collective experiences and talents to the amazement of the international hip-hop community. The group combines the fiery poetics and sonic genius of Poetic Da Grym Reaper (formerly Too Poetic - Grym is an acronym for "Ghetto Repaired Young Mind"), Frukwan the Gatekeeper (formerly of Stetsasonic), RZA the Rzarector (of Wu-Tang Clan), the man who came up with the name Gravediggaz and the whole concept behind it) and Prince Paul aka Dr. Strange (De La Soul, Stetsasonic) - a creative quartet of underground luminaries. "We've all been in the game for a long time, " states RZA, his expression mad intense. "I feel like it's our mission to take our skills to the next level on this project." The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel is made up of tracks that offer the chance to experience the group's spiritual and creative growth. The joint is basically a 15-track-deep exploration of life on today's streets. "The songs on [the new album] are like reportage from the dark sides of our own neighborhoods," says Prince Paul. "We are not trying to be like an episode of 'Chiller Theatre,' but reality can be very scary." Still on a mission to "resurrect the mentally dead," compelling rhythms have managed to create a challenging, mind-bending masterpiece. With the arrival of The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel, taking hip-hop to the next level has become a reality.
