This second entry into The Wes Dodson Timeline recounts the crossing of paths with bassist, William Gernand, and vocalist, Richard Lee Baker (both natives of Alvin, Texas) in late 1991.
Aided by a mini-keg of Reichelbräu, the trio consummated their friendship over the New Years 1992 holiday, recording a pair of originals, Morning Cherub and Pans Arpeggio, on January 3rd.
Inspired, the three plodded forth with the recording of Psychedelia (January 12th), Solemn Artimus (January 24th), in addition to a home video taping of the first three songs.
The recordings from this period were made by way of Dodsons primitive, tape deck-to-tape deck recording method, a Yamaha DD-5 drum machine, and a TOA powered mixer. They were essentially live recordings with no potential for analog correction or enhancement. The combination of a no control mix, the annoying drum machine, and Bakers piercing falsetto reflect why recordings from this era have the unfortunate distinction of being the poorest preserved in the Wes Dodson catalog.
By the summer of 1992, the still drummer-less trio rented rehearsal space on the third floor of Francisco Studios, in downtown Houston.
Changing their name from Golgotha to Creep brought about the addition of 2nd guitarist, Hector Reyes, and a drummer whose name has been lost to time.
Catal Huyuk, a Houston-haunt previously known as The Axiom, booked the band for a Sunday night show (13 DEC 1992) little more than a month after opening its doors.
This was to be the first and last public performance from Creep.
Moreover, the deterioration of personal relations between Dodson and Baker soon took a nose dive into oblivion, resulting in the two permanently parting ways on New Years Day, 1993.
Dodson and Gernand continued on for a short time, penning standalone material that became the foundation for Cheesy Drip (and Dodsons eventual relocation to Magnolia, Texas a short time later). The two also befriended La Porte, Texas drummer, Gary Thompson, who would later join Dodson in the original lineup of ratbastard in the fall of 1995.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
In the audience for the Catal Huyuk gig were a handful of depraved sodomites from Francisco Studio's. The only noise they made was to inform us that we fucked up our cover of Death Comes Ripping.
You could almost hear the saliva fall from their mouths and splatter on the floor...
