Preston aka Gods Elect transformation to being a beacon of the Christian music community as multi-talented MC Gods Elect was a long journey.
Hailing from Washington D.C., Elect had a love of music for as long as he can remember. His father introduced him to an eclectic mix including R & B, reggae, jazz, and rap, and he culled all those influences to create his own unique style of hip-hop and music performance for school talent shows and performances for friends and family.
The merging of his music with Gods message did not come until later in life, but it would eventually be what saved him. The Washington-based hip-hop artist is not afraid to hide that he would go on to make bad choices later in his youth.
I was involved with the wrong crowd, he says. I was just trying to learn the streets.
It was in the unlikeliest of places that Elect would find his calling. At the age of 21, he was sentenced to a brief prison term for drug possession. While sleep on a certain night in prison God appeared to him in a dream.
He let me see a glimpse in a dream of what was going to happen in the future and showed me how he was going to use me to further his ministry, recalled Elect.
In his prison, every cell was equipped with a bible that Elect had not ever bothered reading before. When he woke up the next day, he saw the bible and immersed himself in it so thoroughly that he didnt leave his jail cell for two days.
It was as if the bible actually lit up, he said. It was almost like God was telling me to pick it up.
When he later went downstairs to use the phone, he noticed one of the other inmates using their telephone call to speak to his pastor and anxiously asked his fellow inmate if he could speak to him so he could express the strange and wonderful experience he was going through.
The pastor then invited him to begin a Fellowship at Christ Gospel when he got out and it was there that he started his new life in service and understanding of God and his ways.
It was very comforting knowing Im destined to be in Heaven, but more importantly, knowing how to be on Earth, says Elect.
Looking to return to music, Elect sought to rebrand himself combining music with Gods message. His stage name Gods Elect comes from the Greek word Elektos which means Gods Chosen.
Through a mutual friend, Elect caught the attention of Baltimore hip-hop artist Sammy Spades who invited him to the studio of his long-time collaborator Tunji Sawyer. Impressed with what he saw, Sawyer took Elect under his wing and signed him to his record label Sheep Musik.?
In 2007, Elect recorded the popular tracks Nothing, New Man and the mixtape, God is Not Dead. His music would also be featured on SacredApparelMixTape.com as well.
Elect later decided that in to order be a leader in the movement and dedicate himself to supporting and embracing the work of other artists who had the vision to merge hip-hop with ministry, he needed his own label.?
Since turning this vision into what is today known as ChristMusiq, Elect has toured all over the East Coast spreading his hip-hop-fused ministry to places as far away as Arkansas, Florida and New York in over 120 shows per year.?
His CD, recorded at Maryland-based 66 Brooks Production, took him three years to make. Overcoming his personal issues, learning the industry of gospel, developing chemistry with studio producers, and taking the time to be selective in the songs he wanted to represent his projects were all part of his journey to get to the present.?
I know that theres a time for everything. Its the season for me right now, says Elect.?
For his CD, TO BE CONTINUED.., Elect oversaw all music production and tracks. His new single, ChristMusiq is one of 10 finalists for the upcoming DMV awards in the category of New artist for gospel hip hop.?
Elect currently resides in Maryland where he owns his own business in addition to his music career. He is a happily married father of four children and is an active member of Bridgeway Community Church in Maryland.
