Free Joy

Heeeyyy, how's it goin'. I'm Joy, a 20-year old student at UW in Seattle, making music with Propellerheads Reason software when I get the inspiration. I made this page so I can have all my music in one accessible place, much like the early Yaellergrunspittond days of MP3.com. Oh, the memories. Anyway, I'm not sure who's going to be visiting this page, so I'll go ahead and write a little bit about all this for those who don't know.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
The history is this: One day in high school, I downloaded the program called Jeskola Buzz, I think after seeing some guys from school put on an electronic performance at Living Arts. I tinkered about with it for a while, until I got Propellerhead's Reason software for Christmas a couple of years ago...and that's where I am today, still trying to figure out how the program works. Ha.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Liiiive in my bedroom.
Your musical influences
I love Kate Bush. I have trouble citing 'influences,' because I think I've been influenced in some way or another by every musical group I've listened to. That said, I think my music most reflects my listening to: Orbital, Plaid, Underworld, Sasha, DJ Shadow, brothomstates, Arovane, Seefeel, Tristeza, Bonobo, Morcheeba, Tarentel...although, I must say, some of my stuff has sort of a New Age-y sound, which is probably due to my childhood roots of Andreas Vollenweider and Yanni (please keep your insults to yourself). Of course, I also like to have a good beat, which is partly due to being a drummer myself but also from listening to drum 'n bass, IDM and the like, especially Autechre, Aphex Twin, and Squarepusher. I also have a not-so-secret affinity for trance, which might be where I picked up my tendency towards the cheesier melodies. Other influences that may or may not have anything to do with how my music sounds: KATE BUSH, Tori Amos, Bjork, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Philip Glass, Holst, Daft Punk, Stereolab, Four Tet, Chris Clark, The Dirty Three, GYBE!, Explosions in the Sky, Lamb, Lali Puna, Pilote, Mice Parade, umm I'll stop now. Oh yeah. I also like Thomas Newman's film scores. He's amazingly amazing.
What equipment do you use?
Propellerhead's Reason software and my Creative Prodikeys keyboard. It types, too!
Anything else?
If you take nothing else away from being at my webpage, remember this: GO LISTEN TO SOME KATE BUSH RIGHT NOW.
