Frank Romanelli

I began doing solo gigs full time in the summer of 1999. I didn't write much before that when I was in a band or when I first started soloing, but the writing started happening after about a year, then the gig started to change.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Frank Romanelli discovered that he could make people happy with music when he was four years old, singing Italian songs and dancing for his grandfather. When Frank was ten years old he got his first guitar. Born and raised in Providence RI, Frank Romanelli began playing guitar at age 11. His wide range of musical influences includes John Lennon, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, and Jeff Hubbard, a former band mate to name a few. Audiences and critics have responded to his original music with excitement from Los Angeles, California to Newport, Rhode Island. Franks music has become well known to small loyal audiences in LA, at clubs like The Rainbow Bar and Grille on Sunset Blvd, The Joint in West LA, Fenners Fishack on the pier of Hermosa Beach and Burbank Bar and Grille in Burbank as well as throughout New England. Frank's first public performance of original music was at a coffee house in Hampton Beach, NH when he was fifteen years old. Before that, it was kept to school plays, church, family and parties with friends. While in college, one of Frank's roommates and close friends convinced him to join his band and they kept it going, doing acoustic favorites and some originals, for a few years. Frank also stayed involved in music through teaching, directing and acting. In 1999, Frank began doing solo gigs and writing again. His local career was successful. In November 2000, after receiving an invitation to send a demo to an independent record company, he completed his first studio demo and moved to LA from January to May 2001. Frank's LA experience was very rewarding and in May 2001, he returned to the northeast to play summer venues. While in route, Frank enjoyed playing shows in Salt Lake City and Denver. On June 29, 2001 he had the opportunity to perform a seventy-minute opener in Newport RI for Aztec Two-Step, a popular folk duo from Greenwich Village, NY and local Newport favorite whom he had camoed with in December, 2000. Summer turned to winter and the opportunities to play continued. Frank returned to LA in November 2001 and February 2002 to perform shows while continuing to write and record. By January 2002, he was committed to performing only original music whenever possible. In the winter of 2002, Frank put together a back-up band and a studio band, and with a good and talented friend as his local producer/band manager, produced a new demo. The band performed two shows in Providence and a headline show on May 11, 2002 in Newport, RI. Frank began a west coast solo tour in June which continued through November. He continues to reside in Newport, RI. Frank sees many opportunities throughout the country to introduce his music to people who can help him reach many listeners through recording and touring. Hes not just looking to get signed, hes looking for people who like his music and believe, as he does, that his music can make a difference.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I played LA and southern California, and stay open to national opportunities. I also play the Southern New England beach gig along with Providence, RI and Cambridge/Boston, MA.. I like the beach gig but loved playing the rock clubs on Sunset and in West LA as well.
Your musical influences
Well I guess I'd have to include whoever the guy was who wrote Peppino. Also Paul Simon, John Lennon, Neil Young, Dave Matthews, Jeff Hubbard (my former band mate), and a bunch of others. I'm still being influenced.
What equipment do you use?
Just me, my acoustic guitar and my harmonicas when I'm solo. With the band, it's me on acoustic and lead vocals, with a lead guitarist (mostly electric), bass, drums and percussions and back up vocals.
Anything else?
I love everything about music. I think all types of music have great artists and songs and I appreciate those greats. I love when music evolves and a new style or sound or approach is created.
