Existence Precedes Essence
Existence Precedes Essence (referred to more easily as simply EPE) is an ambient project consisting solely of amateur multi-instrumentalist and incompetent sound designer Alexander Tandy.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Some pretentious twat in his bedroom listened to too much music and decided to write his own. Not much to it, really.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
This project is studio-only, a ground for some of my personal ideas and creative visions. Not really a 'live' music genre, in my opinion, as opposed to say, rock or metal.
Your musical influences
Kevin Moore (also known as Chroma Key) is undoubtedly a huge influence in every aspect of EPE. Other particular influences include more post-rock-esque acts like Helios (a crucial inspiration) and Hammock, Eastern ambient acts such as Indigo Seven (again, a vital influence), Skyway and Dragon Lounge, and film score composers such as Don Davis. My piano work is heavily influenced by Jordan Rudess (excluding the mindblowing virtuosity) and Yann Tiersen.
Much of my inspiration also comes from images, scenery, media (film, literature, television, games, anime and the like) and real life.
What equipment do you use?
The DAW Ableton Live and its various related software synthesizers (Operator and Sampler mostly), as well as a range of VSTs.
