Evading Alastor
Evading Alastor's music is difficult to describe. It's familiar yet unexpected, comforting at times and painfully honest at others. Their live set takes the listener on a journey, spanning the full spectrum of human emotion. From the carefree, energetic optimism of songs like "Saturday Night" and "More" to the raw emotion of "With You" and "32 Hours", their music embraces the good and bad of life. "Life is complex. It's filled with contrasts: happiness and emptiness; passion and apathy; success and failure. We want to create great music that people will enjoy listening to while writing lyrics that speak about all of these aspects of life," says Justin Balthrop. So far, they are doing just that.
Band/artist history
Evading Alastor formed at the beginning of 2004 when Justin [lead vocals, guitar] returned to Albuquerque, NM after spending six months living and working in England. Scott De Keno [keys, vocals, guitar] and Jeremy Doorn [drums] have been long-time friends of Justin's, and Johnny Silva [bass] met Justin in 2002 when he moved to Albuquerque from Portland, OR. This isn't the first time Justin, Scott and Jeremy have played together. Justin and Jeremy played in a garage rock band their freshman year in high school, and the three of them played in a progressive rock band a few years later. Johnny has played piano his whole life and only started playing bass when the band formed, but he has learned quickly.
They draw inspiration from a wide variety of musical influences which give their music a diverse flavor. Some of their favorite artists are Toad the Wet Sprocket, Coldplay, Counting Crows, John Mayer, The Beatles, U2 and The Police, but they listen to everything from bluegrass to funk. Critics describe their sound as "a breath of fresh air" and "very professional". Their memorable vocal melodies, thriving harmonies, and infectious energy catch you the first time you hear their music, and you immediately want to hear more.
Evading Alastor has developed a dynamic live set of original songs, and they've been playing live shows around New Mexico since March. During that time, they've had the time of their lives and developed a loyal following. They're currently recording a full-length album for release by the end of the year, and when that is done, they plan to begin playing shows throughout the Southwestern United States. "We want people to hear our music. We love playing music because music affects people like nothing else in this world can," says Justin. "If our music affects people if it makes them think, makes them smile, comforts them or changes them then we've done what we hoped to do. That's what music is about for us."
