Emperor State is a three-piece indie/rock band from the UK, which came into existence in July 2003. The band's sound has developed since inception into a blend of each member's musical tates united by a common core of influences. The songs that ensue are an ensemble of key elements of the best classic and contemporary rock and pop bands in western music.
Band/artist history
Hailing from the city of Leicester, Loz Tilley, (guitarist) met Aaron Pain (drummer) via a local internet music website in the summer of 2003. Pete Harrison (Bassist) was introduced to them via a friend and Emperor State was born. The band began playing Leicester venues after 6 months of practicing, making The Charlotte their first port of call, supporting King Adora. On stage, the band's charisma shone and the music emphasised their ambitions and ability to succeed.
"It was vital that we rehearsed for so long before gigging," Aaron says. "We believed we needed to concentrate on fine tuning every song before performing it live. It all paid off, especially when playing alongside King Adora."
"Image is important." Loz says. "Were not a band that just stands still on stage expecting the crowd to love us. We try to earn the crowds respect. If a song makes us dance on stage, or jump around, well do it because it feels right. Im not saying were going to start dressing up in Spandex suits and acting over the top - no one should be subjected to that!"
With their charm, and honest approach not to mention a set full of heartfelt and anthemic songs Emperor State bring out every musical nuance, captivating their crowd. With their fanbase blossoming, via the band's hard work and their first recording together making waves, the futures bright for the trio.
Now, after a year together, Emperor State has collaborated with many great allies in the music industry. Patrick Eggle Guitars were so impressed with the bands sound and professionalism; theyve begun sponsoring them with new guitars and amps. Whilst recording at Woodbine Street studio in Leamington Spa, John Rivers (working with top artists throughout his career) produced an incredible feel to their first recording, capturing the essence of their musical style. Exciting times are ahead, and with their first double A side single to be released at The Charlotte, on Tuesday 2nd November 2004 Emperor State are finding more friends in the industry.
Were not just meeting influencial people in the Music industry, fans are helping us by coming along to gigs, chatting on our website and taking a tremendous interest in our music. Pete says. After every gig we play, well always mingle with the audience and get their real opinions on our performance, to help further our music. After all, fans are vital to success.
Emperor State aim to stay true to their roots, always making sure Leicester is a priority for gigs and new releases. The band is also gaining fans in the Midlands and beyond, making their mark at Donnington Park and The Social in Nottingham. Talks are going ahead with other established venues around the country.
Ive always had an ambition to play at The Cavern in Liverpool, Loz explains. Im a huge Beatles fan and although the club has been re-built since the Fab Four, just to play in the place will be an amazing experience.
Keeping a good relationship with other bands enables us to get the inside info on the best venues, Aaron mentions. Many bands we play with invite us to support them elsewhere in the country. Weve even been invited up to Edinburgh in the New Year.
Their last venture at Sumo, Leicester was a milestone for the band. Each song captured the attention and hearts of the audience and a huge cry of more rang out as their last song ended. Loz recalls, It was a brilliant atmosphere, when the lights werent shining on us you could see every persons face watching everything we did. Its really encouraging to see those signs and you know youre getting it right.
The debut 'Double A side' CD, is to be released by the band at The Charlotte, 2nd November 2004.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We like to play live - it's what music's all about. We play around the Midlands in England at venues like The Charlotte, The Social and Sumo. Our highlight was at The Social, when we started to play 'Monster'. We knew very few people there but the crowd started to dance to this song like Zombies which we all found amusing. It's nice to see how audiences react to your music and The Social proved we could captivate an audience without being reknowned in their city. The music says it all, people say and I agree.
Your musical influences
We're into Coldplay, Muse, Turin Brakes, The Police and anything that's musically catchy. We like to create heart-felt and rocky songs with plenty of memorable chord sequences and riffs. Everyone in the band works together to make the song as a whole, rather than each playing their own part. Structure to each song is vital to all of us, because if it doesn't sound right to us, then how could we expect the crowd enjoy it? People start humming the tunes to themselves once they've listened to our songs.
What equipment do you use?
