A modern chick rocker reminiscent of Krissy Hyne, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Pat Benatar combine that with the sweet depth of Joni Mitchell and U2. Imagine a redheaded Gwen Stefani with a touch of Stevie Nicks mystique-and a guitar. She is softening the edges of Rock n Roll. With three songs finished on her first record, Elyse is ready to present herself as a surefire artist and songwriter, with a voice that destined to be heard.
Band/artist history
Elyse Dana Haren is a Manhattan baby-LA transplant, born with bright lights and even bigger dreams in here eyes. Determined to be a pure songwriting vessel with honesty, integrity and conviction. In such a pre-packaged age. it is rare to find true artistry that creates within the structure that is popular music. Driven, idealistic, sensitive, and yet grounded; Elyse strives to create the kind of music that takes hold of you and doesnt let go until youve been changed and inspired. There are several precocious stories of her singing Simon and Garfunkels Slip Sliding Away from her crib (even the verses).
Surrounded by the love of language and folk music, stemming from her English teacher mother to her fathers Opera and Classical music, Elyse learned early on the power and freedom in music and language; though it would take her a while to put the two together into original songs.
By age 10, Elyse became inspired by the depth of social commentary I heard in Don Henleys The End of the Innocence amongst the synthesized age that was her 1980s childhood. She became intrigued by the poetic outspoken lyrics of the Indigo Girls and then, after years of singing Musical theatre and even some Opera, at a Fleetwood Mac concert Elyse discovered she had always been a singer/songwriter.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I've played at the Knitting Factory, Highland Grounds, the Rainbow and others...I love playing live...the instant exchange of energy between you and the instrument, between you and the audience, between you and the song, and the room itself...It's magical.
Your musical influences
I would aspire to be described as a female U2. My earliest influences were Simon and Garfukel, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell and the Beatles. My first big influence was Fleetwood Mac and then I started playing guitar and moved to great female acoustic songwriters like Patty Griffin, The Indigo Girls, to Tori Amos, Alanis, Sheryl Crow, and then the edge of the Pretenders,Heart and Pat Benatar... great melodiesdynamic vocals raw passion and auraawesome songwriting and penetrating lyrics
What equipment do you use?
I play a Gibson acoustic and a Schecter electric.
