Electric Impressions
This is the early music of guitarist Kevin Van Sant.
This music, recorded mostly in 1988 and 1989, was the culmination of three years of composing and recording multi-part guitar music. When I was 18 through 20 I was composing and recording a new tune almost daily. Essentially these recordings amounted to a sort of musical diary, each new tune was simply reflecting my mood that day. I always viewed this music as impressionistic, some have called it theatrical.
I started out recording these tunes on the very first consumer model multi-track cassette machine, the Fostex X-15. Later when I produced this record I re-recorded some of my favorite tunes from those tapes on an eight track Tascam 1/2" reel to reel set-up. There are a couple of vocal tunes which I wrote to include members of a band I was playing with at the time.
Except for the drums and vocals, I played all of the instruments on these recordings.
Shortly after this music was recorded I began turning my attention to jazz music. A couple of years later the electric rock stylings of this project and these years were a thing of my past and I was fully entrenched in a passion for jazz.
My regular website is:
I also maintain a web site here on soundclick which features clips of my recent jazz recordings.
I still have a few hundred vinyl LP copies of Electric Impressions. If you are interested in owning a copy send me an email.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Now I am a profesional jazz guitarist and so I play out all the time. I regret that very little of the "Electric Impressions" music was ever performed live.
