Edge City

Austin, TX  USA
August 15, 2001
Edge City combines the singer-songwriter tradition of their current home in Austin, Texas, with the East Coast rock'n'roll of their former home in Maryland Led by singer-songrocker Jim Patton and vocalist/partner Sherry Brokus, Edge City blends intelligent, literate lyrics and wall of sound vocals with Byrds/Band/Petty style American rock.
Band/artist history
Originally from Baltimore, Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus relocated Edge City to Austin,Texas where they recorded their "Mystery Ride" CD with producer Lloyd Maines, recently dubbed "the guru of Texas record producers" by the Dallas Morning News.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, we play live, wherever we can, mostly in Austin TX or in the Baltimore-Washington area, where we used to live. Mostly we play as a full band, but occasionally as an acoustic trio. We love playing live, love playing with a band, have had too many great moments to mention, but one that stands out was our Thanksgiving show in Maryland in 1998 when we returned after a four year absence to an amazing crowd of people.
Your musical influences
Patton cites 20th century American fiction ("from Fitzgerald and Hemingway and Faulkner to Kerouac and Salinger and Raymond Chandler") and the variety of jobs held by the friends he grew up with in Maryland ("I knew doctors and lawyers and waitresses and gravediggers and the guy who drove the truck that emptied the port-o-pots all over the state") as the main source of his lyrical inspiration. Musically, Patton admits he learned acoustic guitar playing Bob Dylan songs, and electric guitar playing the Rolling Stones, and "that was the last time I learned anybody else's songs but my own." In addition to Dylan and the Stones, Patton cites musical influences from Hank Williams and Big Joe Turner and Coltrane to the more obvious Byrds, Band, Petty, Neil Young, and Van Morrison.
