Dylan Smith Music

Hi, I'm Dylan. This isn't a page for my 'band' as I'm in a few different bands, for which I record songs, and also record covers of other bands songs for my own enjoyment, so this is where you can get it all. I play/write death or black metal most of the time, with some prog influences, but I also play plenty of classic metal, hard rock, and even some nu-metal I got into a long time ago. Expect anything sort of Richie Kotzen-esque, to something you would expect to hear from Decapitated, and most rock/metal things inbetween. I will eventually post some soft songs I've written too, but heavy stuff is what I feel I am best at.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Umm, I've been playing guitar for at least 13 years, 5 of which is probably serious playing. Had a band in high school (still with the boys now) and just got into heavier and heavier (and more technical) music, and enjoy playing it all.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I do play live with one of my bands in Newcastle and Port Macquarie, but with the other bands no. One band is sort of lazy and we're keen to play covers in pubs in Newcastle, and the other one needs a drummer to get off the ground.
Your musical influences
God there is a huge list. In terms of writing songs and things like that...probably Nevermore, Decapitated, Meshuggah, Black Label society, Opeth, Emperor, Nile, early In Flames, At the Gates, Dissection, Korn, early Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Ozzy Osbourne, Edge of Sanity, Sevendust, Iron Maiden. As far as my 'idols' or players that really influence my technique and tone and stuff like that...Jeff Loomis, Zakk Wylde, Richie Kotzen, Dan Swano, George Lynch, Fredrik Thordendal, Muhummud Suicmez (sp?), Brett Garsed, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Vogg, James Murphy, Alex Skolnick, probably heaps of others I've missed, etc. I also like these guys just as artists/musicians too...John Farnham, Mark Knopfler (dire straits), Tom Jones, Meatloaf (bat out of hell = best song ever), Warrel Dane, Billy Sheehan, George Kollias, Vitek (R.I.P), Gene Hoglan, Victor Wooten, Lajon Witherspoon, etc.
What equipment do you use?
Marshall TSL100 head with a 1960a cabinet. MXR 10 band EQ. MXR ZW-44 Zakk Wylde overdrive pedal. Gibson Les Paul standard in ebony with bone piping. ESP Horizon NT in see through black, with Dimarzio D activators. Schecter C7 Hellraiser with an 81-7 in bridge and 60-7 in neck. Cubase SX3 and EZdrummer with Drumkit From Hell mod. Line6 Toneport UX2 with metalshop, vintage and FX junkie packs. Shure sm57 microphone. Samson Rubicon r5a monitors. Saving for an ENGL invader100 or powerball head, and getting rid of my marshall at the end of the year. :)
Anything else?
I love my life and my friends. I'm studying to be an ancient history high school teacher. I love drawing/sketching too.
