Let me introduce you to the band: me, my PC and a bunch of instruments in my basement
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Played part time in club bands in the UK for several years when I was young, kidding myself that I was getting practice, and meanwhile writing my own stuff that I was one day going to release upon the world. Guess what? It never happened. Moral of the story to younger artists: do it now. Tomorrow comes too soon. Finally gave up musical aspirations when I had kids, and settled on the family life. Good trade. Re-established an interest when I started playing again in ‘the Blunt Instruments’, with me on bass, George Beckett on guitar and Pete Cliff on drums. Crashing out sixties rock music in pubs around the south of England for three years, we originally met at a music fund-raiser for cancer research. Just wanting to play for fun, and all being past dreams of stardom, we carried on playing pubs and parties for the hell of it, and donated our proceeds over those three years to cancer research - about $10,000. Probably the most fun I ever had playing music (and, ironically, I had to have treatment for cancer myself 7 years ago). Fast forward to the last few years, and with the advent of the PC music workstation, I’ve had the time and the inclination and the equipment to at last do what I once dreamed of doing. Making music, and getting it out there. Now if only I could take it live (anyone interested in the Bay Area drop me a line!)
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Haven’t played live since moving from the UK to the States 12 years ago. Used to play bass in pub and club bands in the UK. My most memorable moment was playing “All You Need Is Love” in a pub while a punch up erupted in the back... Love playing live, and would like to get back to it one day.
Your musical influences
Far too many to mention them all. I love a lot of the 60’s British Invasion stuff (Hollies, Tremolo’s etc), Beatles and the Stones are massive influences, big early Roxy Music fan before they sold out, perpetual admiration for David Bowie. Also, Split Enz, (and later Crowded House / Finn Brothers), and the more raw side of music epitomized by Pearl Jam. Not the greatest Pink Floyd lover, but people say they hear the experimental influence (more Roxy and Crowded House methinks).
What equipment do you use?
I use Magix Music Studio running on a PC to record and mix. A Westone Thunder 1A guitar and a Fendar Jazz Special bass are my mainstays.
Anything else?
Make music not war.
