The Truth, laid bare The Truth are, without a doubt, a slap in the proverbial face to all those currently staring glazy-eyed and dribble-chinned at the UK music scene. Manufactured money-spinners have forced desire-driven talent further underground for too long. But the tide is definitely turning. Toxie, Shiftie and Mr Jiggz are riding their own ingenious wave; dubbed Medways Urban Option, they are a unique blend of distinct styles, simmering with energy and raw magnetism. When Toxie met Shiftie at school in Rainham, Kent, it was loathe at first sight gangsta glares across the classroom and doing battle with rhymes before realising they were actually chattin from the same book, if not the same page, and would be better off joining forces. Shiftie, named so not for a love of loitering in dodgy areas, has a heart of Drum and Bass, but loves nothing better than to throw his words down to any freakish hard hitting kind of beat. A blonde, streetwise little looker, Shiftie (aka Jay) has a serene and reserved air about him; major laydee appeal factor, without a doubt. He lives by take each day as it comes, which is quite handy really, because how else can you possibly take each day?! In the UK Garage corner is Toxie; his reality name is Max, but for the purpose of this biog, lets call him the Wildcard. A far cry from the typical hatted-up, hoody-smothered MC, this quirky character clearly has his own smart sense of style and a vocab capacity to rival Countdown contestants! Hes not the serious one (The Truth are, in fact, minus a serious one), but hes definitely the thinker; eager to get across that they are simply giving a voice to the mindset of modern youth in a style that reflects its true complexity. (Deep, huh? And the surface hasnt even been scuffed yet, let alone scratched!) And then there were two. Seventeen year old Jay and Max spent time scribing rhymes at the back of the class, and taking the guise of Tox and Shift to the mic whenever possible; hijacking a pirate radio station and trouncing the competition at various talent productions. They were well on their way to finding their style, but something was missing: a sense of direction, a voice of wisdom and guidance a muse, you might say. Enter one muse, Mr Jiggz. Now, if Mr Jiggz looks familiar, thats because he is.....got it yet?....too slow; the answers youre looking for are 3rd Edge and JTee. Stumbling across each other on the club circuit, Mr Jiggz agreed to lend an ear and find out what The Truth were all about. I could say that the rest is history, but then Jiggzy boy wouldnt get his bit. So here goes: To be a Muse is to inspire creativity, which is exactly his role; a DJ by trade, this eccentric soul lives for music if you listen really carefully you might even hear it flowing through his veins. Leaving Toxie and Shiftie to front The Truth, Mr Jiggz is on production, providing the beats and adding that 'Jiggy' vibe, leaving his stamp of quality on every track with the occasional beatbox and vocal. Both Toxie and Shiftie agree that JTee has opened their minds and taken what they do to another level. When it comes to defining the style of this threefold collaboration, its no easy task, and in fact The Truth are keen to steer clear of such boundaries. You only have to listen to the soothing panpipe (yes, thats panpipe) melody of Tha 1st Time', a curious form of love song, followed by soulful motown story Any other day to the dark and heavy 'Payback' followed by the lively and humourous Wot do you want? to realise these boyz are not keeping to one path of musical style or vocal theme. The Truth dont claim to be what theyre not, which is part of their magic; they stick to what they know best, following instinct and state of mind rather than adhering / aspiring to a particular image. Toxie, Shiftie and Mr Jiggz are writing their own script. All thats left now is to take it to the main stage.
