Band/artist history
In 1953 a young band from the outskirts of Chattanooga, TN made a demo record at a local recording studio. This was the 1st in a series of recordings that Double Dick Slick would make before their breakthrough album "Arm" in 1959. With "Arm" the band enjoyed mild success in Europe & Asia but it never really took off in the states. The follow up album "Yardley" fell on deaf ears as well. Over the next 10 years they released 17 more albums including "Leg" in 1968 which the band didn't even record themselves. Although they were a rock band smack dab in the middle of the sexual revolution; DDS had little effect on women. The tour for "Leg" was short lived & was cancelled when vocalist Cle Peckinpaugh's addiction to masturbation threatened to destroy the band. After intensive accupuncture therapy in Japan; Cle had a new lease on life. DDS recorded their next embarrassing failure "Howlohehung" at a studio in Hong Kong. While there they met a young martial arts film producer named Ching Ping. In 1970 they were given their 1st real chance at success. Mr. Ping asked them to write the soundtrack for the kung-fu movie "Under the Fisted Sun". Throughout the 70's DDS wrote the soundtracks for 8 more ping films. Among others "Fist", "Son of Fist", "Fist of the Fisted Fist", & the disco laden 1977 "More Fist Than You Can Shake Your Fist At" soundtracks were all failures. The band made headlines in late '78. After being examined they astonished doctors all over the world when it was discovered that they were not aging. They had not aged a day since their 1st demo 25 years earlier! All the media attention did little to boost sales of the 1979 album "Hey, We're the Guys Who Don't Even Age". The 1980 follow-up "Gee, I Feel Young", was such a flop that even the band denied their involvement in it. As the underground punk scene began to thrive, they tried to jump on the bandwagon. The 3 punk albums "Oi Ay", "Wanna Fight?", & "Down With Maggie", all released in '82 were laughed at by punk insiders. The enterprising band started "We're Broke" records in 1984 & tried to capitalize on the new wave scene that was topping the charts all over the world. They released "Shabaaz" in November of that year with a new look. They abided by every trend but still were scoffed at by women. After several failed relationships; Cle Peckinpaugh once again succumbed to self pleasure. This was the beginning of a turbulent time for Double Dick Slick. In January of '85 "We're Broke " records lived up to it's name. CEO of the company Solid Rodface filed for bankruptcy. Over the next 2 years the band went their seperate ways. Peckinpaugh struggled with his addiction, Solid Rodface appeared on British television as the children's character "Fried Baconface", bassist Mutt got a job at a place called Frieda's Truck Stop, & Minner started Minner's Minner Sales & sold bait & tackle to fishermen in the Tennessee Valley. In June of 1987 the band attended drummer Bunny's 57th birthday party. He looked as young as ever but the reunion did not go without incident. 2 years earlier Bunny had begun experiencing bowel control problems. He defecated in the swimming pool at the party & further distanced the members of the band from each other. Peckinpaugh & Rodface both were repulsed by the act & formed a hatred for Bunny. Minner & Mutt embraced him & vowed to raise money for medical bills to correct the problem. In August, Mutt contacted the 2 alienated members of the group & convinced them to reform under the name "SteelLove". Cle changed his name to Kip SteelLove & they released "Hairspray" in May of '89. It was a glam metal album that emulated bands like Poison, Whitesnake, & Motley Crue. "Hairspray" failed to reach even the top 500. In 1991, as Nirvana spearheaded the grunge movement, SteelLove saw a light at the end of a painful tunnel. Cle had kicked his habit once again & Bunny was no longer doing inhalants. They quit taking baths & started wearing flannel shirts constantly. Now known as 2 Slick Richards, they released a grunge album called "Deviated Septum". This yielded their 1st radio hit. The single "My Mom Loves Me So Suck It" generated album sales the band had never achieved before. The album didn't reach the top 100 but did sell 30,000 copies worldwide. Anxious to hit the big time, they hastily recorded their next grunge effort "Orville Grungenbacher". Once again they were thrusted into the depths of failure. In 1995, 2 Slick Richards became Whiteboy Gangsta, a hard core rap band that was another stab at the mainstream. Cle Peckinpaugh was now known as MC Uzi Boy. The singles "Click Click" & "Buster" were actually burned at record stores by frustrated listeners. Meanwhile, bands like Metallica & Pantera were making millions playing heavy music that the band felt was inspired by the demos released between 1953 & 57. In 1997 they changed their name back to Double Dick Slick & decided to stick to their roots. After selling out to every popular style of music & not having aged a day in 46 years, they now release in 1999, the demos, the ones that started it all.
