Doogie Howitzer
A shy Leo, Doogie Howitzer started rapping at the tender age of 30. Doogie is not only a fan of hip hop, but a student of it too, and has knowledge and a unique perspective to impart. And with a background in creative writing and journalism, Doogie is a writer first and rapper second. The Bucket of Gold Teeth, his group with rapper/DJ Shazbot, is signed to Hand'Solo Records (past home to Buck 65, Moka Only and Sixtoo) and is working towards a debut EP.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Writing and rap have been passions of mine for going on 15 years. Although a long-time hip hop journalist, it's only been recently that I've decided to merge my writing with rap by delving into the music as a lyricist. This direction was encouraged by Mic Wac and Da Boobie Regulator, with whom I would form The Almighty Ughnauts! A few songs were recorded together before Mic Wac and Da Boobie Regulator heard the call of film and bounced. Creature Box's DJ (and sometime MC) was just starting to come into the fold, so the two of us teamed up as The Bucket of Gold Teeth. Coincidentally, the first song I recorded was over a beat produced by Shazbot that appeared on Legendary Entertainment's Grimey Groovz compilation. The song was called "Fucdapolice" and featured Selfhelp and Kotep Omegatron. The song sounds like crap. A piece of advice: make sure the guy mixing the song knows what he's doing...
The Bucket of Gold Teeth are in the process of recording material for their debut EP on Hand'Solo Records (past home to Buck 65, Sixtoo and Moka Only).
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I still need to take that all important step...
