Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I started making mixtapes in grade 5. Nothing crazy just recording my favorite songs and putting them all on one tape. My cousins had all the equipment and let me borrow mixers and tape decks and cd players so I would take whatever I could to use and make my mixes. I would sit there for hours arranging the track order, listening to sound qualiity, trying to fit as many songs on one tape without the songs cutting off at the ends. I would make tapes for the kids in my neighbourhood and school of all the new music and stuff that I thought they'd like. When I got my 1st laptop in grade 9 I got into encoding Real Audio tracks and mp3s. I would take whatever cds or wav files I had and encode them cause I was so amazed at the ID tags when I played the songs. I would spend hours just getting the sound quality right and the perfect ID tag. In jr high school we had a music program where a song would get played over the PA in the morning in homeroom so I would take songs that I liked and make radio edits of them so I could hear and bring em in. None of them got played but it put me in a mode to where I would just make them just for fun. Shortly after I discovered I could play 2 tracks at the same time in winamp and that's how I got into blending and remixing. I had a wav editing program on the laptop so I would cut everything up and mix em up. I learned how to record from my laptop to my tape deck and so I was making cd quality mix tapes. In grade 11 I got a desktop computer that I was able to do more with so I used Cool Edit Pro and I would spend days removing clicks and pops and unwanted sounds out of files and making clean sounding mix tapes from start to finish. I got a cd burner and took my craft from cassette tape to CD. I thought of myself as a producer because I had control of the content that was going to be on the cd. So I would spend endless hours and many days working on 1 cd just cleaning up the songs so they came in and out cleanly and the arrangments of the songs and what order I wanted them in what would sound good after what and the list goes on. Just to hear a product that was well-put together was my goal. I learned the art of beatmatching around that time so my blending was on point at that time. I would make blends and send them out to DJs to play on the radio. DJ Maximus Clean of 102.7 CFRO was the first DJ to play my songs on the radio and play them in the club. The 1st song he played in the club was a blend I made of Westside Connection - Bow Down and Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E. Back then I used to go under the name DJ TimDawg so if you were to go on to napster and typed in "Westside Connection - Bow Down (DJ TimDawg Still DRE Blend)" it would show up. That was big for me cause it was my mix on the net. Once I got into a more productive state I started making full length cds of just my mixes. My background is Fijian so I've always been around Hindi/Bhangra music and around this time I was into all this, mix cds were surfacing from other people of Hindi/Bhangra songs mixed with hip hop music so I had to try it out. Not only that but I was disappointed in what was being made because the sound quality was horrible and the mixing style wasn't anything special but people took to it like it was a big deal. I am still working a project but it's not one of my main priorities at the moment. I bought American Audio Pro Scratch 2s in 2003 and I took my music knowledge to mixing and went from there. In the begining of 2004 I started playing in small empty bars for free. August 2004 I enrolled in a digital audio recording program at private school in Vancouver and started learning about music production. The school was horrible and I left 4 months into the program but that's when I started making beats. I made a series of club style mixs in September 2004 and haven't stopped since. I bought 2 technic 1200 turntables in May 2005 and have been spinning in nightclubs since. I am currently working with Galactic Entertainment (www.galactic.ca) and SouldGood Entertainment (www.soulgood.ca) for 2006 I have been trying to make at least one mix for each month. it's May 27th, 2006 and I have 13 mixes completed. From the time I took the audio recording program to now I have been working on learning music and music theory and I've been working on making beats and producing ever since.
