DJ AG
Thanks for visiting.
Im DJ AG, a student in London UK. Im heavily into producing.
Im new to producing but its the one thing I really love doing.
Ill try and be brief:
The sub-genre of music I love to listen to and produce in the style of, is: "Oldskool UK Garage" - that is, UK Garage (UKG) from cerca 1994-2001. From then on, it took on a new sound, which lately has become laughable and nothing like its former style. Many people have left the scene in disgust while others are holding on, waiting for the change - or reversing of this - to occur.
The pioneers of this 'new style' of UKG, sometimes called "nuskool garage", "grime", "dark", "8bar", or "forward" dont even consider their music as UKG or care for it, yet theyve managed to kill the scene anyway.
The production quality of UK Garage changed, decreased, and its vibe and common sound changed also. Unfortunately, I prefered its old sound, so Im producing in the style of old, ignoring the UKG thats out there now. I find it embarrasing actually.
In short, I love 94-2001 style UK Garage, and try to produce in this style.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Started producing in about 2002 I would say, so Im a year into it.
Started on Fruityloops...realised it wasnt for the subgenre Im doing.
Moved on to Reason 1.01 and fell in love with it. Made little loops each week.
Production dried up a bit - I realised how badly I needed Rhodes - the single most used instrument in "oldskool UK Garage". Esp cos my PC was so slow and I couldnt make or hear complexed RAM-demanding tunes.
Came back to Reason with a new PC and started Rewiring with Logic for a better sound and control. Logic had its own Rhodes simulation so I thought I could try and produce in the old sound of Garage.
Dont know a single chord or how to make my rhodes sound exactly like true Oldskool Garage pioneers "TuffJam", MJ Cole (his former sound), Ramsey and Fen, and Y tribe. But Im learning. I dont know any chords, but hey...
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
