We feel for Herb Asher. He can constantly hear the background noise of 87 soupy strings playing renditions of light-operas and broadway shows and he doesn't know why. When he tries to play a tape of his favourite singer he can still hear those soupy strings. They manifest themselves everywhere. He believes he's billions of miles out in space, back in his dome in the Star System CY30-CY30B, and that maybe the local, ancient diety Yah, is punishing humans for bringing electronic interference. He doesn't know he's actually back on Earth. Our music is dedicated to Herb Asher and all those like him.
Band/artist history
I started playing electronic music in 1983 with the purchase of my first synthesizer, a Roland SH3A. Before too long I had a rather large collection of synths and drum machines (and man, do I wish I'd kept them all). In the late 80's I began working with singer/songwriter Colin Spencer and, with various guest vocalists (most notably Carol Wheaton) released a few tracks under the name of Millions In Hell. Due to the eclectic nature of our music we managed to perplex a lot of people rather than build a fan base. Those waiting for the next acid house number were greeted with a gothic ballad instead. That's what happens when you throw 3 geminis together. In the 90's electronica established itself as a popular force in music. Sub-genres were shooting up all over the place and everyone was rushing off and making music that would slot nicely into their favourite niche. We tried to think like that. Make our music into one coherent whole. Hopefully we didn't succeed.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
No. It's never been a particular ambition. I love the journey a good artist album or DJ mix can take you on. Especially if it sounds good in the car, at night, on a long road trip. A journey within a journey.
Your musical influences
Everything from New Order to Todd Terry and beyond. It's about what's good for the song not who we can make it sound like. I love all forms of electronica and then some, but if I were to name one thing that's stayed with me and permeated almost everything I've done it would be the Simple Minds album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84). If I create music that sends me to the place where that sends me I'm happy.
What equipment do you use?
Novation Supernova II Kurzweil K2000 Ensoniq ESQ 1 Korg Polysix Korg Mono/Poly Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 Roland SH101 Roland SH09 Yamaha CS01 Crumar Trilogy Ensonic EPS 16+ Emu Systems Emax Roland TR 808 Roland TB 303 Roland TB 303 with 10x memory expansion Roland DR110 Roland MC303 Roland MKS 70 super JX Korg DVP1 Vocoder and a whole stack of effects units
Anything else?
Most of the songs represented here are versions that existed before they came into their final phase. It's a personal collection of mixes that may be flawed, but somehow managed to capture the energy of a particular moment. Some are mastered from 4 track, some came straight out of machines onto tape and some were recorded in a studio. Thankyou for listening.
