December Aeternalis
Black Metal and Death Metal fused with early 90's hardcore and grindcore
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Newark, New Jersey ... Brick City... home to some of music's great pioneers. Redman, Queen Latifah, Tango & Cash, and technically even Ice-T by default of birth location, Newark has long been a city to watch for groundbreaking artists to emerge from. The cold reality of the streets has always brought forth a special something from it's artists, the raw, passionate, sincerity brought forth from their struggle to claw their way to the top. December Aeternalis is no different, except for the fact that they have absolutely nothing in common with the aforementioned artists.
Blazing out of Brick City with a vengeance comes December Aeternalis, long looked over but always cited by their peers as a standing force in the underground metal and hardcore scene, December Aeternalis has never made their mark by scoring the theme song to teenage angst and following the trends of their peers, but by consistently raising the bar from the very beginning of their long spanning career.
From humble beginnings in New Jersey's burgeoning hardcore scene December Aeternalis built their rabidly loyal following by penning some of the most aggressive and brutal tracks of the day, their infectiously heavy sound, combined with their uncanny ability to get a show shut down, whether by inciting a riot, throwing a monitor into the crowd, causing massive property damage to whatever venue they may be in, fans knew when Mario, Jerry, and company took the stage that there was going to be hell to pay... and you better keep an eye open for that mic stand. this practice has been copped by any of today's bands in an attempt to create a feeling of excitement, but nothing comes close to the true danger of flying objects, intimidating crowds, and fire breathing that comprised the live experience of December Aeternalis.
From the first note of their debut LP "embrace the angel" painstakingly crafted at Water Music Studios in Hoboken NJ to the final crushing chord the true essence of December Aeternalis was conveyed in a brief 18 minutes . . . taking you on an emotional rollercoaster through the eyes of 4 people who havent lost faith in humanity, but just cant find it in them to trust again. "embrace the angel" took december to levels not seen in NJ's aggressive music scene, though label problems plagued the release with changeovers, lack of promotion, and the eventual folding of 1134 Records into On The Rise Records, a label with a very diverse roster that found December Aeternalis to be too off the scale for them to market appropriately.
Fast forward two years of performing, writing, and growing. December Aeternalis entered the studio again with plans to turn heads again. Armed with two devastating tracks that laid waste to everything else coming out of the metal scene at the time. Tracking the artful single "i slept with glass in my mouth" at snug harbor (famous for their great work with NYHC stalwarts Indecision), December Aeternalis had the
ammunition they needed to forge out into the battlefield again. Releasing arguably the best record of the year (at under 5 minutes long) the "i slept with glass in my mouth" CDS was given the royal treatment by label Red Dawn Records (who also re-released "embrace the angel" at the same time, ironically enough a record that they had
originally paid to have recorded) with spotlighting in major retail markets and high profile chains such as Newbury Comics and taste making locations like Vintage Vinyl, December Aeternalis came out that year with a bang, from their record release show with Drowningman (a band people actually cared about at the time), to their tours with The Wage of Sin and others, December Aeternalis used their sheer determination
to pummel their sound into eardrums across the United States.
And then the world went black ...
Silence is deafening, but never so much as the day December Aeternalis walked away from Metal. Looking back at the hiatus to regroup and write for the long delayed and ill fated "life without oxygen" LP, december never went away, they were just planning the next step. but the "December Curse" had other plans to play out for them, while starting
pre-production on "life without oxygen" they received word that their label was closing it's doors for good, leaving them back at their starting point, but this only made them stronger. they spent the next two years making sporadic performances, opening record release shows for artists who once opened for them and were seen in their crowds
singing along and raising hell. December Aeternalis was slowly planning their return, taking their time to craft their masterpiece. their defining moment...
Bringing us to the present. December Aeternalis have returned in full force, currently holed away at Full Force Studios (Suffocation, etc.) putting the finishing touches on their yet to be titled new EP, this will be the release of December Aeternalis' first new material in 4 years. The punishment is going to begin again. and don't think it's going away anytime soon.
