Band/artist history
Dayton Kain the Don (birth name Derrick “DJ” Garrison) was born in February of 1982, into a military family. His father was in the Air Force, therefore they moved around much during his childhood. Dayton Kain's love for pro wrestling as a child is what got him into hip-hop. On his 8th birthday, while living in North Carolina, a neighbor bought him the "Wrestlemania V" tape on VHS. During the tape, Run-DMC performed, and this was technically the first hip hop song Kain had ever heard. About a year later, Kain and his family moved to Germany. During his stay there, he started to get more and more into hip-hop music. LL Cool J, NWA, Cypress Hill, Will Smith and Kriss Kross were his first introductions into this world. When he got older, Kain would go back and listen to artists such as Rakim, Slick Rick, EPMD and others to get a taste of hip hop's "Golden Age" He first started writing in late 1995 while living in Tucson, Arizona. However he never kept any of his old lyrics. It wasn't until around 1998, while living in Jefferson City, Missouri, that he was encouraged to keep the verses that he wrote down. In the summer of 1999, Kain met a rapper from Kansas City at a party, and sold a verse to him for $2000. This inspired Dayton Kain to start taking writing and rapping more serious. Kain moved to St. Louis, Missouri later on in the summer of 1999, to live with his Father who had since retired from the Air Force. Dayton never stopped writing while he lived in St. Louis. In 2001, he hooked up with DJ 314 who wanted him to perform at the "DownforLife.com Halloween Party". The DJ had agreed to do a blitz recording session with Kain a week before the party and do his entire album within that time period. However by the time the party came around, Dayton Kain was left with no material to perform, only freestyles. He still did his job though, and left with his head held high, even if his album was delayed once again. For the final time, Dayton moved to Jefferson City, Missouri again, in summer of 2001. By fall, he was working 3 jobs at one time. In January of 2002, Kain hooked up with ManM of Major League Ballarz, Inc. (MLB, Inc.). In ManM, he found the type of producer and support he had been looking for. On September 13th, 2002, after a few more delays, "The Dynasty Begins...EP" was released. Still unsigned, Kain had to promote himself non-stop. In doing so, he talked to Ahdedott, a local rapper and also a DJ on Monday nights for 88.9 KJLU. It was on her show, that "Basic Procedure" a collabo with ManM, "The Dynasty Begins...", and "Take This (Family Blaze Family) all debuted. About a month later, ManM was given his own radio show on 88.9, which he called "The Graveyard Shift". On "The Graveyard Shift", Kain is a frequent guest on the show, which is co-hosted by DJ Smurf. Without take a stop to catch his breath, Kain is already working on his second album, and his first full-length album. Still untitled, The Don says there will be around 16 tracks on it. Kain is showing to the world why he calls himself ".... the only UNSIGNED HYPE that deserves 5 MICS in the SAME ISSUE".
