DAVID VESEL
Inspired by European dance sounds, seasoned with American rock, David walks the grey space inbetween.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
I'm a classically trained pianist since age 5, but gave that up for rock bands in high school. In 1987, I began the one-man-band thing, using scrounged and borrowed equipment. I released my first album, , in 1992, as a home-produced cassette, which sold about 100 copies. It was very well received, but the follow up, , in 1994, was not very good and was virtually ignored.
I took a long break from music, then returned in 1999 and produced , a collection of synthpop instrumentals. My current album is which came out in 2002. I'm presently in the studio working on the tracks for , which should be out by the end of the summer.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I have not played live since 1991, but I'm slowly coming around to the idea of playing out again. I'm looking at doing some live dates around St. Louis in 2004.
Your musical influences
Erasure, Cosmicity, Monolithic, Stock Aiken Waterman, SSQ/Stacey Q, Talk Talk, Billy Joel, industrial music.
What equipment do you use?
Nearly all of the last two albums were recorded using only an Alesis QS-6. Since then, I have fleshed my studio out a great deal with vintage gear. My rig now includes the QS6, plus an Ensoniq ESQ-M, an Oberheim Matrix 6R, a Peavey Spectrum Synth, an E-Mu Morpheus, an Ensoniq Mirage sampler, a Wurlitzer 200 electric piano, an alphaSyntauri (a very rare Apple II-based soft synth), and a Commodore 64 rigged up to be used as a MIDI slave -- kinda like a Sidstation but a lot cheaper! I run it all through a Mackie CR-1604 mixer into an Echo Audio Darla 24 encoding card. I track with Cakewalk Sonar 3 and do post-production in Adobe Audition 1 (formerly Cool Edit Pro).
I have also just purchased a Big Briar (now Moog Music) Etherwave theremin. I am utterly befuddled by it, but it's a long term project to learn to play it.
