Bluegrass

Dave Hanley is native to the San Joaquin Valley of California. Born and bred to be good at what ever he puts his hands on - applying that good sense to his music Dave will capture you and envelope you in the melodies he sings and tales he tells Big sound, big heart and never settling for -good enough-. Prepare to be rocked and rolled barefoot in a patch of bluegrass.
Band/artist history
A native to the California central valley, grew up with the sweet smell of chocolate billowing from the Hershey factory at the edge of town and a railroad that cut the town in half when it passed through at a snail's pace. Daves guitar picking style, lyrics and harmonies grab live audiences, making them wander through a countryside that is sometimes lonely and unforgiving; sometimes telling tales with tongue in cheek while exposing the fragility of life in a small town. Dave Hanley became emancipated at the age of 16. Leaving his family in Vancouver, WA, Dave returned to California where he landed a job as a park employee in Wawona, Yosemite Nat'l Park. During this time, he met the legendary Frank Solivan (California Bluegrass Assn. Ambassador), known for his fast flat-picking rhythmic banjo style, melody and tempo. Over time Dave found his own voice, rhythm and technique, and his own way to tell a story. In 1999 Dave Hanley joined the Sons of Levi. Their debut album Enter In was recorded with Jonny Colla (Huey Lewis & The News) at his APT.2 recording studio in Novato CA. Preproduction was handled by Brad Gillis (Night Ranger). Seeing all of the gold and platinum albums all of the walls was truly inspiring. Chris Hayes even popped his head in once or twice. In 2002, the Puffin Billies were formed, a band Dave Hanley cofounded. The band quickly formed a large fan base, At one point there were people driving 200 miles to see us play, people would follow us over to San Francisco and fill the club we were playing that night, the experience was really humbling. The Puffin Billies released their self-titled LP in 2002, to which Dave contributed two original tracks; Bandalino and Perfect Day. Perfect Day was one of the most played tracks on college radio in the Valley. In 2002 The Billies received a Modesto Area Music Award in the Bluegrass/Americana category, receiving praise from print and radio all over the Central Valley. Dave Hanley played guitar and sang vocals with the Puffin Billies for four years opening for Canned Heat (Barton Enterprises, inc.) Built Like Alaska (Future Farmer) and Grandaddy (Virgin V2). Midway through 2004 Dave embarked on an ambitious solo endeavor. Gifthorse, released in September 2005, is quickly becoming a favorite amongst Indie, Bluegrass and Americana folks.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
yes, at this point the west coast only. I love playing live.I wish I could just tour continually..haha. I think the most memorable moment so far was an all day show out in the foothills we were playing and Jason Lytle(Grandaddy) showed up to watch the show.
