Dan Papirany (b. March 07, 1967, Tel Aviv,Israel) is a Jazz pianist, bandleader, teacher and a composer whose compositions include some references and ideas borrowed from contemporary tunes and standard harmonies.
Dan studied Drums for a short while in Tel Aviv with Arale Kaminski, and in 1989 he moved to New Zealand. At 22 years of age Dan enrolled at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music studying Jazz Drumming with Roger Sellers, and on his 3rd year he changed his major to Jazz piano.
In 1999 Dan graduated from Massey University conservatorium of music with a bachelor of music performance. The foundation of his technique was laid in three years of study withLeigh Jackson (Wellington Jazz Tutor). Dan started performing with his own trio in Wellington at local bars, sometimes performing in a duo format at local hotels.
In 2002 Dan moved to Auckland taking a musical director position at Hato Petera College. Dan has recently recorded two new trio albums with Pete McGregor on Bass and Owen Kneebone on Drums. The first album is comprised of standard tunes and is titled “Session one”. The second album titled “Originals Vol 1” is comprised of originals only. Both albums are going to be released commercially by New Zealand’s label Ode Records.
Dan has performed in many venues in the North Island region, including performances in Jazz festivals and a current residency at the M.L.C bar in Auckland. Dan’s playing style is quite often compared to the style of the great Jazz pianist Bill Evans, which reflects the direction Dan has chosen to go with his music. The current trio is sensitive and playing cool and bebop Jazz styles.Anything else?
