I started playing guitar in 6th grade. I was in a "rock band" in eigth grade with accomplished San Jose musician/conductor Lee Pardini, as well as some other people (David Chaid, Keith Lewis, and Joe Salinas.) That sucked because I wasn't very good, and Keith wasn't very nice. But I did drink a lot of Weinhard's Root Beer.
Freshman year, I wrote my first song with the help of Dan Novack and the harmonica accompaniment of Richard Slatten. I wrote a few more in the ensuing year, but I didn't really start to take myself seriously until summer of 2001. With faithful "roadie" Joey Kannegieser and enough people interested in me to warrant it, I played a 40 minute set everyday for a month.
I met up with Eric Markow, with whom I recorded my first two albums. It was a good experience for the most part and I thank him for his diligence on Geek. After a tiff involving money after Also Ran, we had a falling out, and I quit Emzine Records.
I recorded my third, fourth, fifth and sixth albums at Kitchen Whore in San Jose with the help of the wonderful Lisa Dewey. If you live near San Jose and would like a cheap, but very professional place to record, ask me for her contact information.
Right now, I'm working on new material and am still playing with the The Learn-by-doings.
I've played a few small shows here and there and my immediate goal is to get a paying gig somewhere small, like one of the cafes in the San Luis area. My lifetime goal is to pet a penguin.
If you want me to play a show in your living room, email me and we'll figure something out.
Weezer, Ozma, Ben Kweller, Ben Folds, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Andrew Bird, Hefner, Long Winters, Superdrag, Mason Jennings, Old 97's, Rilo Kiley
The thing is, I don't really sound like them, so don't expect that.
O-lan is my trusty black laquer yamaha FG-411. She's been with me since 6th grade.
Cindy is my 1975 Guild Cherry D-25. I've been doing most of my recent recording with her.
