Cold the Winter was the moniker I used for the songs that I've written and rearranged over the years. In 2019, I recorded a six-song EP titled "Skylines and the Horizons" with the help of my friends JD and Matt. Skylines was the culmination of a journey that started in 2011, took strides forward in 2017, and was finalized over the course of 2018 and 2019.
As of 2024, Cold the Winter has taken a backseat to KCWM, a moniker I've released three albums, eight singles. It is likely that any future Cold the Winter songs will be released under the KCWM banner.
Band/artist history
I've played with some great musicians and even better friends. While I do not play with them any longer, the practices and performances are something I will always look back on and cherish.
Since Cold the Winter is just a name, its history is really just the time I've spent writing and recording the music. I've taken songs from my past songwriting life and either chopped them up to put into other songs, reworked them into something very different than they used to be, or forgotten them altogether.
I've recorded songs for years now, but things took a giant step forward in 2011 when I invested in EZ Drummer after years of scraping together samples and programming every beat by hand. I'd record a song idea, program drums to it, then record the guitar again. From there, I'd write the second guitar line, bass, and then add in little guitar textures. Eventually, I upgraded EZD to Superior Drummer.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I haven't played live since 2000. The last time I did play live, it was a songwriting life ago. Towards the end of that band, we played a string of shows with a local band I was a big fan of. That was really cool.
I've taken parts of those old songs and spliced them into newer songs where they work better.
Your musical influences
A lot of bands have pushed and pulled me in different directions. It's a rare occurrence where I write a song that I feel sounds like a particular band.
I have and will always admire what Pearl Jam has done to stay fresh in the ever changing climate that is rock music, though I will never claim to write music on the same level that they do. I wanted to play guitar after hearing "Alive", so I'd say they're probably the biggest influence on me as a musician.
Starflyer 59 and their Silver and Americana albums played a big part in the general direction my song structuring has gone in, especially with how they used two guitars.
There are a lot of bands I like to try and take bits and pieces from, including: Ben Folds, Foo Fighters, early STP, Tragedy Ann, Soundgarden, and many other good 90's bands. I fail to sound like those bands, but the sentiment is there.
