Cloud Eleven are a new band led by L.A.-based pop music savant Rick Gallego, who played all of the instruments (except for drums, which were played by Greg Schroeder of the Baltimore-based Starbelly) on this self-titled debut, CLOUD ELEVEN (DFCD 2001).
CLOUD ELEVEN is the first full-length release on DF2K (Del-Fi 2000), a new imprint run by young pop-fiend mavericks on the staff of a legendary and often-infamous indie label from the Sixties -- Del-Fi Records. This new "dee-eff-too-kay" label is designed to be the kind of label to bring back the kind of albums that'll make you want to plug in those headphones again, and proudly, Cloud Eleven's release is the first of what will hopefully be many great releases.
To some, it may seem that Rick's a real-life "Nowhere Man," (that is, he seems to have "come from out of nowhere"), but the simple truth is sometimes just that; he's simply been biding his time until now, writing songs/playing/producing/and generally working hard to get to this very point in time & space -- the right here, right now.
Rick's been a fixture on L.A.'s pop-friendly music scene for quite a while now, and has been quietly building up a solid reputation as a careful craftsman of finely-tuned sounds while woodshedding in his home studio, laying down the tracks for this stellar debut. Let's call it a "retro-futuristic" look at the Nineties from a time-capsule module of the Sixties.
Musically, Cloud Eleven blend crunchy/fuzzy guitar-driven melodies -- think the best of Jason Falkner, Matthew Sweet -- and soft rock-inspired soundscapes, often employing subtle touches that bring to mind Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, early Bee Gees, obscure soft-rock acts like The Wallace Collection, Montage, and the slightly-less-obscure Left Banke. ("Look Of Sky" is Gallego's tribute to the Left Banke's Michael Brown -- born Michael Lookofsky -- in fact, the lyrics are cobbled together from titles and snatches of Left Banke songs). Cloud Eleven also includes a reverent cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Didn't Wanna Have To Do It."
From the melodic rush of "Tokyo Aquarium"'s opening lines .. "Dear radio, it's me /I'm callin' Borneo" ..through lush sitar/guitar-drenched gems like "Hurry Home".. the Byrds-ian "Spiral (Come Way Down)" ..the Beatle-esque "Hole," . all the way through the life-affirming lilt of the BritPop-art styled album closer, "Sun Arise" . "See the sun arise and bring another day.," Cloud Eleven features a dozen great new songs laced with Gallego's oblique, surreal lyrics, often reminiscent of the Magical Mystery Tour/"Strawberry Fields Forever" era school of songwriting. Really.
So now you have all you need to know about Cloud Eleven...if you think about it, we're taking it two clouds higher than Cloud Nine, a state of nirvana for some. For pure pop fiends, fans & everyone else, welcome to the next level.
