A self-taught fingerstyle guitarist, I'm from California and live in the UK now. My music is from and for the heart, contributing to a little more stillness in the world, a sense of coming back home to what's inside each of us. A relaxing, supportive blend of ambient, classical, instrumental, and celtic. In Edinburgh's castles , churches and and festivals, I've done solo performances, workshops on heart-based Guitar Dharma, and also sung with the vocal group, Penicuik Taize Vaults Singers, in places like Rosslyn Chapel and Crichton Collegiate Church. I even wrote an orchestration for a youth orchestra playing in China. Venues played in the UK include Dundas Castle, the Balmoral Hotel, the Scottish Storytelling Centre's Netherbow Theatre, Criagmillar Castle, St Mark's Unitarian Church, and the Penicuik Arts Centre, and more. My plays online have topped 1 million (on Pandora & Spotify), and my Meadow Run CD was named a Top 10 CD by New Age Reporter in 2005. Here are a few quotes from massage therapists & others. "Many, many days I've left it on all day--for me & the clients." -- Lynn, Massage therapist, Birmingham "A wonderful alternative to new age music usually used for massage." -- Beth, Massage therapist, Portsmouth "Excellent accompaniment to massage sessions." -- Kim, Massage therapist "A collection of original uplifting solo guitar pieces that Clarelynn Rose plays gently enough to be suitable for massage. A rare indie find!!!" --MassageGen "I've heard a lot of acoustic guitar releases over the years, and far too many cannot offer the warm and friendly atmosphere that The Redwood Sidthe does." --Jimmy, Instrumental Weekly reviewer
Band/artist history
In 1999, Clarelynn was just getting back into the guitar after a long hiatus, and had the good fortune to attend a one-week seminar with guitarists Alex de Grassi and John Renbourn. Since then, de Grassi has been a mentor providing feedback on her compositions, which has improved the orchestration, color and texture of her pieces immeasurably. Renbourn has remained an important influence as well in his own complicated way. After establishing her independent label, Heartwood Music, in 2000 Clarelynn produced her debut CD, The Redwood Sidthe. This album as well as her second, Elegant Tern, contain a mix of new pieces and old compositions that date back to the mid-1980s. In 2004, after hearing recordings of Robert Barto performing the works of Sylvius Leopold Weiss on the lute, she took up the 13-course baroque lute. After studying briefly with Barto at the Lute Society of American seminar in 2004, she recorded her first baroque lute composition for the third album, Meadow Run. In the words of one reviewer, this most recent CD has established her as "clearly one of the premier steel string acoustic guitar soloists/composers playing and recording today." In 2005, Rose moved to Scotland under a composer's visa. She composes for both the guitar and lute, and has also penned an arrangement of a Chinese tune for full symphony orchestra. The orchestration was played in Shanghai and Hangzhou in 2006.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Absolutely -- festivals, concerts, weddings, accompanying storytellers, etc. The interaction with audiences large and small is great. Lots of special moments, too many to list here.
Your musical influences
Alex de Grassi -- innovative and gorgeous fingerstyle, steel string guitar Daniel Hecht -- loved the free flowing fingerstyle Joni Mitchell -- soaked up her mellow vibes John Renbourn -- too complicated to explain; nice celtic influence
What equipment do you use?
Goodall guitar, Baroque lute (13-course), Raven preamp, Elixir strings
Anything else?
Clarelynn is promoting the concept of Guitar Dharma. this heart-based approach encourages the individual to find her own path in terms of playing, composition, and more. Workshops and a booklet on Guitar Dharma are available. ________ As a former forester, Clarelynn spent many years working outdoors, working as an Forest Stewardship Council certified forester and later as an auditor for the FSC. Rose comments, "When writing a piece, I get a feeling about it and match that to a feeling I've had elsewhere -- often from time in the woods." Her music is also infused with deep spirit, as is her heart-based approach to her instruments (Guitar Dharma). Rose draws on the wellspring of having lived in China as a graduate student, studying Qigong, TaiChi, Daoist and Buddhist teachings, and writing songs in Mandarin. She continues her Buddhist studies and deepening of her personal practice. Her compositions Amitabha Buddha and Song of Putuo Mountain are based on traditional Buddhist chants.
