Band/artist history
Matter of fact, they just got on the map a little while ago in the hip-hop world, with the introduction of B. Rich and 80 Dimes. But in a quiet Baltimore Townhouse, in a bedroom the size of a prison cell, on a modest bed, there is a man who claims sanctuary. This is a man who sees problems with Hip-hop music, and where it is headed. That man is David Heilker, known to his peers as C1.
C1 (chosen 1) is writing fervently in his notebook at all hours of the night, or pecking at the keys on his computer with fanatic zeal to be the solution. C brings witty rhymes to the table, laced with a battle rap background, and a penchant for telling stories, C can be telling you a joke in one bar, and make you rethink the path your life is headed down the next.
'As a battle emcee, you learn punchlines and wordplay are the most important things to a verse,' C confesses but that's not all there is to rap, the battle is great, and I ll do it til the day I can?t flow anymore, but punchlines can only take you so far in the industry.' C1 says that he isn t trying to redefine rap, just to do it right. 'There are a lot of cats out right now, who are ill and mainstream, and then there are cats who are just whack, but they got deals and money and everything. I do not want to encourage that kind of bullshit rap. I want to make hip-hop an uncomfortable place for that type of 'emcee,' if you can call them that.'
As for what he thinks of local talent, C said the following: 'I got a lot of love for the local scene, I rap with some cats around here, and a few of the illest emcees I ever heard are from Maryland,' he alleges 'but a lot of locals just are not doing it right, they are emulating the wrong people.'
C1 says that he does not try to be anyone else, though several other artists influence him. 'I like a lot of people out there now, but I do not want to be the next so and so, I just want people to think of Maryland when they think of hip-hop, like a New York, or a California.'Contact
