Always the weak stepsister of more hip college town Lawrence, Kansas City didn't have much of a punk - hardcore scene pre-Nirvana. Not being old enough to drive out to Lawrence (40 miles away), Chaw was part of a group of bands that played affordable (often free) shows in and around KC. Chaw vocalist Scott ran a zine called Project KC that advertised the shows, had a classifieds section that hooked up band members, and was involved in many of the shows. Usually any show proceeds went to paying for the free music & politics zine.
Band/artist history
As for Chaw itself.... 3 guys from Kansas City, MO played together in the attic at Jake's house under the initial name Dingbatt. Scott tried out as the vocalist in 1989, when they were all entering high school. Once they took in Scott, Dingbatt changed their name to 15 Minute Nag, most likely because that's about how much material they had at the time. After playing a "show" in Scott's basement back when friend Eddie still had long hair and listened to glam metal from the 80s, 15 Minute Nag changed their name to Offer. This was one of the band's songs. Offer began playing actual shows every now and then, mostly at a place called Starz on a street actually called Broadway in midtown KC, MO. Around this time, mid high school, Brooks left the band and Jon came on to play the git box. This brought on yet another band name change. There was too much confusion with Offer being both a song name and the band name. After much deliberation, the name Chaw was chosen. This is when the demo was recorded by Moondog in his basement, and more shows began to be played. All in all, these guys played shows all over the greater Kansas City area (and surrounding suburbs) from 1989 - 1993, when Scott and Jake left town for college. There have been two "reunions" (the guys playing together for fun privately), once in 1998, and once in 2000. Along with Morning Missle, the Larry Jones Experience (LJE), Stand, and others, Chaw was a key component of the early Kansas City punk/hardcore scene. This scene later produced other bands such as Coalesce, Boys Life, Get Up Kids, etc.
