Channel 8 is rock-based improv band from Montreal.
All of Channel 8's music is improvised and recorded live to 2-track, without rehearsals and without using overdubs.
Band/artist history
Channel 8 came to be in March of 2004 when old friends and new acquaintances decided to meet in a smoky living room every 2 weeks to share beer, instruments, a mixer, and a 4-way headphone splitter. None of us expected that these informal, bi-weekly drink and jam sessions would amount to anything more than an enjoyable way to spend a snow-bound Saturday. Just for fun, we decided to start taping the jams. That was when we realized that we might be on to something. There, on the tapes, mixed in amongst the background talking, and the blues scale warm-ups, was pure magic.
Much to our own surprise, we had the kind of musical cohesion and electrical synergy that bands take months, even years to build. The recording changed our perspectives, and we began to build and develop our musical ideas as live improvisations - each member bringing his own styles, influences and passions to the table, all of mixing together in a semi-controlled explosion of sound.
Improvisation can be like the musical equivalent of driving around in an unfamiliar city without the luxury of a map. It's about taking chances and making discoveries. It's about trusting in your own talent and the collective muses of the group to steer you in the right direction, and in the process create something special. It's all about capturing a moment. Improv pieces, like moments, can come and go, some memorable, some not. Some beautiful, some hideous. An improvised piece isn't always perfect. But it's almost always one of the following: fresh, original, unique, and almost impossible to recreate.
The common goal of Channel 8 is to create good music, and to share it with anyone willing to listen. Music is meant to be enjoyed: we hope that anyone out there reading this will enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoyed creating it.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We always play live. We find it kind of hard to play dead.
Your musical influences
We are inspired by everything from progressive rock to reggae, electro, jazz, country, noise, experimental - the list goes on... Part of being a musician is having the ability to absorb all styles of music, and somehow funnel some of that back into your own personal sytle.
