Ska's dead? Bullshit. Casual Indifference plays exciting ska/punk/hardcore/reggae/rock with touches of jazz and country. Overtly, biting political lyrics display the group's commitment to social change. Hailing from Portland, OR, Casual Indifference, with a new record under their belt, are ready to take the world head on. Or at least, for beginners, the Northwest.
Band/artist history
Casual Indifference began when drummer Josh and guitarist/songwriter/lead yeller Dan Casual were just in sixth grade. An off-and-on project during middle school, Josh and Dan also played together in a jazz combo, helping to refine their skills and build a chemistry between the two players that is now obvious at any Casual Indifference show. In their junior year of high school, (2003-ish) after going through a number of bass players, Marshall Law was finally added and after the release of the Look Out for Nazi Patriots EP, Casual Indifference played around as a hardcore punk outfit, with occasional bursts into reggae, in the vein of punk legends Bad Brains, Black Flag, the Germs, and others. After a year of fitting into the mold of what it seemed like the scene was asking, the band decided to start experimenting more with different genres of music, focusing more on the reggae elements, and adding ska, as well as hard rock and jazz, into the mix. Chris was added on trumpet in late 2004, when the band really started heading in this more diverse direction. Now, with a new record, Give Me Some of that Subversive Sound, under their belt, co-produced by Dan Casual and Scott Pemberton of Portland funk/jazz greats Triclops, and the new group to the Portland indie scene, National Flower, and featuring him on organ, electric piano, and pedal steel, and with special guest Joe Cunningham who has played with Sponge, the Decemberists, and many others and is a current member of National Flower as well, and with the members back from their first year of college, Casual Indifference is ready to take the Portland music scene head on. Throughout their career, Casual Indifference has played with Oregon punk acts such as The Culprits, Statch and the Rapes, No Heroes, Straitjacket, Re-Fryde, Morganâs Door, Riot Cop, Virus Nine, The Abnormals, All Out, and many others. While the new album sounds great, Casual Indifference is really a band that needs to be experienced live. Their frenzied live shows and love of changing up songs during performances, always leaves the crowds excited.
