Powerful melodies, passionate vocals, and an outstanding high-energy live show make Cassidy an act not to be missed! Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Cassidy is poised to give the emo music scene a long-awaited injection of new passion, new music, and new blood!
Band/artist history
The Cassidy story begins in January 2003. After a number of years as frontman for skate punk outfit Racer Ten (Onefoot Records/Triple Threat Records), Sean Welling moved to Edmonton to start a new project. Once the demos of his new songs were complete, Sean began holding auditions and soon met guitarist Mike Lastiwka, previously of local punk act Fraud. Mike was immediately intrigued by the demos, and found collaborating with Sean to be almost second-nature. A string of bassists and drummers followed; the Cassidy line-up was solidified in December 2003 by drummer Jamie Robertson, previously of Kid Apprehensive, and bassist Chris Yiu, of local emo-core group Hills Have Eyes. Throughout 2003, Cassidy worked hard to perform on a steady basis, quickly earning recognition as a band with an impressive, engaging, and rock-solid live show. By spring 2003, they were headlining shows regularly at Red's and Stars while landing other gigs at The Sidetrack Cafe, The Powerplant, Urban Lounge, and Seedy's. They've shared the stage with indy label artists such as The Johnsons and Far From Heroes, and they've opened for major label acts such as Not By Choice and Lillix. Cassidy has played in front of crowds ranging from 50 to 1500 people, and they always strive to put on the most energetic, most entertaining performance they can. "Each and every show is worthwhile, since there will always be at least one new person who will leave that show a fan." In June 2003, Cassidy recorded their first single "Already Gone" at local studio The Twilight Room. Response to the single was extremely positive, and the song started to receive some airplay on CJSR and The Bear. Following this, Cassidy made a number of media appearances, including performing on A-Channel's The Big Breakfast and Wired, and a radio interview on CJSR. In August 2003, Cassidy returned to The Twilight Room to record 6 tracks for their debut EP. Engineer and producer Ian Martin then spent the next 3 months mixing and mastering the tracks to perfection. Cassidy's anticipated debut EP "Improvement Through Tragedy" was released on Feb. 26, 2004.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We play live shows on a regular basis, generally about once a month, at many well-known Edmonton venues such as Red's, The Sidetrack, Stars, The Powerplant, Seedy's, etc. Our last big show at Red's brought out 1600 people.
Your musical influences
We are heavily influenced by all the great skate punk bands of the 90's, most of which were on Epitaph or Fat Wreck Chords, such as NOFX, Bad Religion, Lagwagon, Face to Face, Millencolin, etc. Other earlier influences include The Pixies, The Cure, Fugazi, and The Get-Up Kids. Our punk-influenced, power pop "emo-ish" sound could be compared to well-known artists such as Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, The Ataris, and The All American Rejects, or lesser known artists such as The Jealous Sound, Number One Fan, and Story of the Year.
What equipment do you use?
Marshall and Rivera guitar amps, Gibson guitars.
