The Carmel Quartet, winners of the first prizes in chamber music and performance of an Israeli work in the prestigious 2004 Aviv competitions , was established in 1999. In 2001 the quartet won first prize in the "Prague-Vienna-Budapest" international competition in Austria. The quartet studied in Israel with Haim Taub and abroad with the members of the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne and with members of the Amadeus, Hagen, Bartok and Janacek Quartets. The quartet has participated in masterclasses with violinists Isaac Stern and Miriam Fried and with violist Rivka Golani. The Carmel Quartet studied with Avi Abramovich and is currently participating in the prestigious Pro-Quartet program in France, coached by Walter Levin of the LaSalle Quartet. The members of the Carmel Quartet have won prizes in competitions and received scholarships from the America Israel Culture Foundation. They are all members of "The Tel-Aviv Soloists", with which they have performed on tour in Europe and the USA, in prestigious halls such as Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Konzerthaus. The quartet has performed with internationally renowned musicians such as violinists Gidon Kremer and Nikolai Znaider, violist Tabea Zimmerman, pianists Ian Fountain and Penina Salzman, guitarist Emanuele Segre and Cantor Alberto Mizrahi. The quartet has performed in concert series in England, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, and in major chamber music series in Israel. In 2004 and 2006 the quartet participated in the prestigious Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival directed by Elena Bashkirova, where they received enthusiastic critical acclaim. The quartet's tour of France and the USA in October-November 2004, including a concert in the Weill Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, was enthusiastically received by audiences and critics, including the New-York Times. The Carmel Quartet's concerts have been broadcast in Israel ("Kol HaMusica"), America (WQXR and WOSU), Canada and Austria. In the 2007-8 season the Carmel Quartet has inaugurated a series of Explained Concerts in Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and Haifa, which has enjoyed both critical and popular acclaim.
