Budapest Dream Orchestra consists of me, my iPhone 4 and the apps iSequence and Music Studio.
It was formed at some point in 2009.
In September 2009 I got an iPhone and after a while my interest to compose music returned, after a twenty-year absence. I searched for an app, found several and ended up with iSequence on my iPhone 3G. I started to make ambient, beautiful music with a jazzy twist built on catchy melodies and cool chord progressions.
The result was Last Train to Vienna, which turned out to be the first full-length album made on an iPhone. It was published on Jamendo.com the 30th of October 2010. I continued to work with my iPhone. Discovered MusicStudio, fell in love with it and made another album. A Winters tale was released in January 2011.
Both albums are a mix between joyful exploration and stunning opportunities lost. There are seeds on the albums that strive towards the sound Im searching for.
The first 7 songs are spread out over a period of almost one year. The first tune I wrote was Gloria Winter. The last one was Balatonbeats, written at lake Balaton in Hungary during the summer 2010.
The next 7 songs are written under a much shorter period, November 2010 to January 2011. The sound is more mature and I found MusicStudio to be a lot more experimental friendly than iSequence. But, it came at a price. The learning curve was much steeper. And Im still learning!
The first song I did in MusicStudio was A Winters Tale. A slow saxophone based tune, somewhat dreamy. Next was Two Tigers Drinking Dr. Pepper. I started work on Snowscapes and it took about 2 weeks to understand what I was doing. But it turned out to something that I really liked. And it has the best bars Ive written so far. An "h" played by a muted trumpet to finish off a solo.
At present, spring/summer 2011, Im working on the release of my third album, Naked Pavement. In mid June/July I plan to release my forth album, Ocean Suburbs.
Band/artist history
2010 Last train to Vienna
2011 A Winter's Tale
Started out fiddling around with my iPhone curious if I could make an entire album on it. And my first album was released in October 2010. Last train to Vienna is the first album in the world entirerly made on an iPhone. At that point I used the app iSequence. After that I switched to Music Studio. My second album, A Winter's Tale, was released in January 2011.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I call my music iPhonemusic. This means that everything is done on my iPhone. No more no less.
At the moment I'm using the apps iSequence, MusicStudio and ProChords.
In iSequence I tend to create more through improvisation and experimentation. But iSequence demands careful planning. There are just 5 channels to use. But I like the minimalist approach and this somewhat problem solving way to make music.
MusicStudio gives me more possibilities. I make the chord progressions in ProChords and work from there. The variety and selection of instruments and sound effects are greater and the abilities to tweak the sound.
The pros with this way of making music are that I carry my studio in my pocket. I don' t have to go to or set up a studio. I can work whenever and wherever I want. I don't have expensive gear or gadgets.
But, there are of course limitations of what you can do compared with a full-fledged studio with all the bells and whistles.
But, it is my belief that iPhone music, with its limitations, is capable of creating a new breed of music. And I want to explore this new musical territory.
One of my ideas and wishes right now is that I really want to form an iPhoneorchestra. It would be exciting to see what can be achieved and how such a project would turn out.
In the future I would like to use my iPhone as a solo instrument and perform my music live. And from time to time I experiment with iHolophone and GyroSynt. These two apps enable me to play the solo parts of my music at the same time it plays the tune.
