Alluring, ear pleasing rock tunes that cause your ears to perk and the hair on the back of you neck to rise. Emotional melodies that engrain themselves in your head for days, accompanied by a crunch of guitars, smooth, rolling bass, and powerful, vigorous drums. In a nutshell, this is a description of Ottawas BUCKSHOT, a highly energetic, entertaining quartet making its name known across the nations capital. With their individualistic interpretation of the last 4 decades of the best rock, metal, alternative, emo, and punk all rolled into one; no nutshell can contain this musical dynamo for long.
Band/artist history
In Kanata, Ontario, Canada, on September 20, 2000, three good friends Adam Vrieling, Luke Gibbons and Dave Chin came together with an aim to satisfy their collective urges to rock. They began to jam out their favorite tunes from the likes of Weezer, The Foo Fighters, and AC/DC, who would soon become their major influences. The trio had their first chance to perform in the Earl of March Talent Show as their first ever public performance. Accompanied with much enthusiasm and encouragement from their many friends, Adam, Luke, and Dave decided to take their band seriously by giving themselves a name. On that crisp, fall day in OAC Physics class, Buckshot Plevna was born. The band focused mainly on playing cover songs, taking on the mentality that covers were more fun to play, more entertaining for the people who came to see them, and most of all, it was the best way to learn how to be a good rock band. With this strategy in mind, Buckshot Plevna quickly became a favorite at the high school coffee houses. But after high school the band was faced with another problem, Dave was moving to London Ontario for University. Before he left the band played one last show at OConnors Irish Pub in their hometown Kanata. Much to their astonishment, Buckshot Plevna was an instant hit with the crowd, among them included a tremendous amount of friends and family that came for support, as well as a full house of regular patrons.
The result of the show encouraged Adam and Luke to continue with the band and over the winter while Dave was out of town for school Luke and Adam began to write original tunes. By the time Dave came back the following summer, Buckshot Plevna was armed with an arsenal of original material and started to play at numerous local venues. During this time the band began to experiment with demo recordings in Lukes basement. Upon listening to their recordings the band noticed there was something missing in order to make their sound complete. The band eventually sought out the talents of their close friend, Evan Kerr on lead guitar. Evan brought amazing musicianship influenced by the great guitarists of 70s and 80s rock, and was a perfect fit to the bands unique chemistry.
Immediately, the band had a solid foundation to begin forming a new sound that was original and unique. Adam leads the group with dynamic stage presence and his vocals wailing on the microphone while providing strong rhythm guitar. On lead guitar, Evan contributed a much needed harder edge, helping the bands sound evolve into a unique blend of pop and hard rock. Luke and Dave, after years of working together, functioned as the tight rhythm section that kept the intense, energetic sound of the band glued together.
With brilliant, catchy, high-energy songs, and a new, shortened name, BUCKSHOT went on to play more gigs than ever before; including shows at The Rainbow Bistro, Babylon Club, local talent hotspot Café Dekcuf, Zaphod Beeblebrox and the legendary Barrymores Music Hall. In the summer of 2003, the band went into Ottawas Raven Street Studios to record their first EP album that included the tracks Gone, Dear Friend, Take It From Me and Sarah. This album has never hit the stores but has secured many shows for the band.
BUCKSHOTS youth, high energy and dedication to their music, has helped the band get noticed in the Ottawa area but they are still waiting for their big break to happen. Currently the band is working on the release of their first full-length album, as well as continuing to play regular shows throughout various venues in Ottawa.
