BOBZILLA

We'll hit you with good old Texas Bar Boogie... Then take you on a trip back to the "old school" days of smoke-filled nightclubs and after hours city life. Plus... We'll give you a taste of Woodstock AND a blend of our own original rock & blues to turn you every which way but loose. OFFICIAL WEB SITE http://www.bobzilla.tv
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Kevin (drums) and I met in a situation four or five years ago backing a singer/songwriter. After we parted ways with the never ending saga of lover's lament, we were hired to play in the backup band for a G & L Guitars event in Dallas (Just-a-Jam I) backing none other than Will Ray of The Hellecasters (www.hellecasters.com). We hooked-up with the two guitar players and the rest is history. We have since played Just-a-Jam II, III, & IV with Will as a reunion of sorts. A ROCKIN' GOOD TIME!
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
It's better than playing dead, isn't it? We play clubs, bars, concerts, festivals, private parties, prisons... wherever. We don't do weddings - bad luck. I take that back, we did play one wedding AND we have played the "first dance" for two other newly married couples... Played "Sweet Jane" both times. Special moment? Autographing a young lady's very nice butt.
Your musical influences
This band's smokin' guitar licks shred blues greats like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, B. B. King, and many more... PLUS be ready to groove to renditions of classic rock heavy weights like Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and George Thorogood & the Destroyers... A rock solid groove from our rhythm section Kevin Rothstein (drums) and Bobzilla (bass guitar/vocals) gives us a powerful edge... Pat Elza (keyboards) is the wild piece to this music puzzle. Pat moves seamlessly from subtle background fill to monster solo fury showing-off his hard rock/heavy metal influences. Finally there's Mercedes. Mercedes is the lone woman among this formerly all-male motley bunch. But don't be fooled, she can belt out a tune with the best of 'em and hang-tough with any and all of the guys. She is the "sweet side." "I really related to the message in Clam Digger. Downright bar boogie." --RickAlan West-- Production Mgr./Clear Channel Radio-Tulsa "Your Flying Saucer performance was awesome! In the few months since I last saw [you] perform you went from "pretty darn good" to "Wow!" Your cover of "Road House Blues" was inspired!... Bob and Kevin proved once again that they can drive the band with the visceral rhythm of a locomotive on a long downhill grade! Congratulations on your first CD release!" --David Young-- "I was very impressed by the sound and song selection. You guys have definitely come a long way since I saw you last about a year ago." --Steve Hill-- Writer/Producer, CBS TV "Bobzilla... Enjoyed the Flying Saucer gig immensely, it was a lot of fun despite the temperature. Thanks for the invitation to come up and jam... Keep up the great bass playing. Considering the terrible acoustics, you and [Kevin] sounded particularly good..." --Chris Denley-- Guest Guitar Player "They played together for the first time at G & L Just-a-Jam 2002 with none other than the remarkable Will Ray of The Hellecasters sitting in on the session... and rocked the house for hours, drewing a bigger crowd than that Dallas night club had ever seen." --Brian Gagnon-- Dallas G & L Just-a-Jam 2002 Organizer "The blues guitarist from hell!" --Cameron Smith-- President of Center Stage Television Host of Smooth Jazz Television
What equipment do you use?
Nothing fancy for me... It's Blues & Rock after all... I have 4 5-string G & L Basses ('05 L-2500/'04 L-2500 fretless/'02 L-2500 fretless/'94 L-5500). I have a Steinberger 5-string for travel. I use an Ampeg SVT DI Box direct AND as a preamp for my rig - an Ampeg 210 Digi Combo (then out to the PA).
Anything else?
Havin' a good time is what it's all about. We've been doin' this music thing a long time now and it wouldn't be worth all the work if we weren't having any fun. I remember playing an outdoor festival event in a large park a couple of years ago... I was getting into the groove in the middle of the third set late that night, when I looked up and saw naked women dancing on all the picnic tables. Oh yeah! That's what I'm talkin' about - good times.
