Bobby Matos
- The Los Angeles Times, December 1998.
Through his releases on CuBop and a busy tour schedule, Bobby Matos has grown into one of the leading lights on today's Latin jazz scene. Matos fifth CuBop release, "Live at MOCA", was recorded live at the L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art and features new tracks plus re-workings of his earlier tunes. It answers the LA Times question and shows Bobby in a jazz-heavy crowd-pleasing mode.
"Live At MOCA" features some of the top names in Latin jazz, including Michael Turre. Burning new tracks like "Jammin at the Crossroads of the World", "African Queen","Ana Maria", "Barbara Milagrosa", "Blues Mambo for 'Trane and Sphere" sit alongside several Matos originals that range from the beautiful to the hard-hitting.
A more straight-ahead release compared to his previous CDs, "Live At MOCA" will continue to build Bobbys reputation in the jazz world. His last release, "Sessions", quickly attracted the support of the jazz radio community as well as Latin music fans.
Growing up in Harlem Bobby Matos was lucky enough to experience the Apollo Theater in the 1950s. Live shows that combined the talents of John Coltrane and vocalist Betty Carter alongside the Herbie Mann Sextet and Willie Bobo and Carlos "Patato" Valdes provided inspiration for a lifetime dedicated to fusing the sound and rhythms of traditional Afro-Cuban music with jazz. For the past two decades, Matos has been nurturing his passion for Latin jazz on the West Coast. Regular gigs and his four releases on San Francisco's CuBop label have established Matos as a force to be reckoned with in the USA. Although an underground fan base dates back to his first ever release in 1969, "My Latin Soul" has always been a favorite amongst collectors and jazz dancers from around the world and has always exchanged hands for large sums of money. From the bass line driven "Roots" to Latin jazz dance classic "Tema Alma de Latina" "My Latin Soul" is a raw adrenaline-infused album that put Bobby Matos on the musical map and on DJ want-lists around the world.
Plagued by record companies that failed to live up to expectations, Matos' career has always suffered at the hands of others. Until the mid '90s his recordings guaranteed obscurity because they were so hard to come by. However, "Chango's Dance" (1995) and "Footprints" (1996) (both on CuBop) marked Matos return to the studio and an increase in the availability of his music to the buying public. More recently, "Sessions" documented previously unreleased material and long out-of-print must-haves from his past. It also serves as a record of the talented people he has worked with over the years, including Poncho Sanchez, Victor Cegarra, Steve Baxter and Michael Turre. In addition to his solo work, Bobby has played and recorded with Tito Puente, Machito, Ben Vereen, Joe Loco, Bette Midler, Miriam Makeba, Jon Secada, Luis Bonfa, amongst others.
