The Black and Brown Movement is an energizing urban arts foundation, out of California. The organization was founded in 1989 by a group of community activists engaged in a broad mobilization to change the representation of multi-cultural artists and at risk youth within the City's urban neighborhoods.
Band/artist history
Growing up in a violent, gang and drug infested neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles, the Movement was born out of unity between three families. These families were the Jones’, the Barrigas, and the Brocks’. A mixture of 2nd and 3rd generations met and bonded in this neighborhood. The Jones’ and the Barrigas’ lived across the street from each other, while the Brocks’ lived around the corner. The connection between families started long before the inception of the BBM. Growing up in our neighborhood, the bonding began with simple childhood games like “Ding-Dong Ditch,” street base / football, and “Hide n’ Seek.” The 2nd generation Movement members started these games, until it was no longer possible to play, due to the excessive gang and drug activity. This was unfortunate for the 3rd generation Movement members. Believe it or not, within the neighborhood, the gangs at times even had unity. There was a Black and Brown gang, who most of the time only protected themselves and the neighborhood. The BBM members, whom never joined either gang, grew up with those gang members as well. The BBM served as intermediates between the two gangs when racial tensions occurred. These were the humble beginnings of the BBM. Over the years we have had to witness the deaths of family and friends as well as members of the BBM. Usually, these deaths took place amongst the youngest and brightest members of the gangs and the BBM members. In 1990, we almost lost one of our “Founding Fathers,” if it were not for the grace of God. Marques Jones was shot 14 times at once, in a case of mistaken identity. In 1997, one of our youngest members, “Young Prophet” Josiah Brocks was sent home to be with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. He was 18 years old at the time. He was also shot, only once in the head, while riding home with a friend on the freeway. Since we were in tune with the streets and its culture, we gravitated toward the music, HIP-HOP music. We found this as an outlet as well as a forum for us to speak”The Good Word,” God’s word, the Gospel. We saw an opportunity to reveal the truth to the youth, in pointing out the similarities and not the differences between Black and Brown. And, in conclusion, we feel that all of the above was motivation enough to give birth to the Black and Brown Movement. Thank you for your time and support
