Big Life Desire is from London, UK, and is the stage name for writer-performer, Keith Harbottle, whose reflective pop songs are new wavesque with a retro-soothing sensibility - described once as Syd Barrett meets Pet Shop Boys meets Blur; the songs mix 80s 'brainy' pop with 90s Britpop and 60s English pop.
Band/artist history
Big Life Desire's songs 'Judgement Day' and 'Beautiful World' both reached the finals of the UK Songwriting Contest (in 2004 and 2003 respectively). A previous Big Life Desire song ('How many times?') was shortlisted in a Canadian songwriting competition ("Pretty song. Strong melody line") and featured in student123.com's online battle of the bands. Big Life Desire's latest CD release is the single 'Beautiful World' (also containing 'Judgement Day') - these tracks witness a more live than programmed sound thanks to the production and playing efforts of the Sound Joint of south London (thanks Barnaby & Chris for live drums/percussion and electric guitar: www.soundjoint.fsnet.co.uk). Also available is the re-recorded 'Sea Of Mystery' (released as a limited edition 7" vinyl single). Previous CD releases include 8 and Once led to fears, and the song 'Do you mean that?' was included on Streamline Record's Aural Feast CD compilation in the late 90s (receiving airplay on Centre FM). This recording emanated from a development scheme with Flat Records (run by Richard Coppen of Tenpole Tudor fame).
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, from time to time - lack of a permanent band makes this harder (usually use self-recorded backing tapes or perform acoustically). Audiences can be tough - I've played to many indifferent ones - but when one person is moved by a song you've performed, it makes it worthwhile.
Your musical influences
Varied, from classical to pop. My songs are pop but more adult/reflective (with a strong synth/pop influence, even though I'm a bass player!) - my influences include literate pop (Pet Shop Boys), classic pop songs (Abba), new wave pop (Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello), singer/songwriter melancholy (David Gray, Black) and pop/rock (After the Fire, Flaming Lips).
