You will not make money off of tangible sales in this industry anymore, PERIOD.
However, you CAN make money on the publishing rights of your music.
Lets say you have a hit record you recorded from a beat you bought online. Unless the beatmaker provided you with a claim ID number from the U.S. copyright office, chances are the beat(s) isn't his/hers OR the beat has uncleared samples. It is absolutely imperative that you have this information. If you start to make money, failure to have the proper rights will most likely result in a lawsuit. A lot of these rookies selling these beats online don't even know the proper procedure of licensing beats. We do not shop anything off the books.
But all laws aside, the good news is that with the evolution of digital distribution, you can now make money without ever having to sign a record deal. Hypothetically, if you were to sell tangible records and went platinum, you're realistically looking at about 8% if you never had a hit record before. With Universal dropping their CD prices to $10.00, this will inevitably become a standard. This means that if you went platinum, you still wouldn't be a millionaire. But who goes platinum now? You're better off never signing a deal, having creative freedom and selling songs out of the comfort of your own home. This site was created with the understanding that the music industry does not exist without the artist. The artist shouldn't be taking cuts, they should be giving them.
