Story behind the song
I Cor 9:24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. They do it to receive a perishable wreath (crown) but we an imperishable. It's in the news everyday – the world is gearing up for the 2012 Olympics. The apostle Paul often used the analogy of the Olympic Games in his explanation of spiritual principles. In doing so he makes it clear that receiving the crown is the result of a concerted effort on the part of the dedicated Believer. Too many times we hear the proposal, whether expressed or implied, that all we have to do is come to Jesus and all of our problems will be solved. It sounds so exciting to the distressed soul that has been beaten and trodden by the circumstances of living in an imperfect world, but any mature Christian knows that such a proposal is not based on reality. Jesus told His disciples that in this world you will have tribulation. And by the time Peter had a few years of experience to his credit he could truthfully write to the early church – beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you, but … keep on rejoicing.
