Story behind the song
My friend John Felix wrote this song. The first time I heard him play it I said, "You've got to record that some day." John passed away in 2009 but before he did he told me to do this song. He wrote out the chord progression for me and gave me a recording. I am proud and honored to have a chance to share his genius.
Lyrics
When we get to heaven the first drink's on me Then next one's on Jesus and the third one is free The fourth one's been paid for by St. Anthony, But when we get to heaven the first drink's on me I spent my life drinking the whiskey and the beer 'cause when things become blurred they sure become clear And I know it ain't right but it ain't all that wrong To spend your life drinking the whiskey and singing the songs And don't wave your finger at me and my glass 'cause down through the years it's the best friend I've had And when it comes time to hang up my hat I'm going to heaven, and start a new tab When we get to heaven, we'll know we belong Their'll be a choir of angels, singing old country songs When we get to heaven, we'll join the party But you better remember, the first drink's on me
