Story behind the song
I guess break-ups make pretty good fodder for songs. I said something I shouldn't have said, and it cost me. At least that was the premise for this song. To be honest, I didn't know her all that well, and nothing ever really happened, so I guess it's not really accurate to say that we "broke up." Nevertheless, it was good song fodder. Jim O'Brien, vocals and guitar Ray Kim, keyboards
Lyrics
MAUREEN Words and music by Ray Kim Verse 1: You know that I never meant to hurt you; I never knew what I said... And if I could get a second chance with you, You'd never be misled... Girl, I didn't know what I had with you; It was something that I never did see... I find myself thinking of you every night... Tell me, do you ever think of me...? Chorus: Maureen, oh where are you now...? Tell me, are you thinking of me somehow...? I never wanted it to end this way, And I haven't been the same since you've gone away... Verse 2: I took for granted the friend that I had; Our love was there all along... I never did hear you 'til I turned around, And suddenly you were gone... Can I tell you how much I miss you...? The feeling I can strongly defend... I'd give up my life and my endless flight To have you in my arms again... Chorus: Maureen, oh where are you now...? Tell me, are you thinking of me somehow...? I never wanted it to end this way, And I haven't been the same since you've gone away... Bridge: I've got your picture in the back of my mind, And I hear the sound of my voice calling your name... And every time I think I've got you out of my mind, Your name comes back to haunt me, and I'm struck by that familiar pain... (instrumental ad lib) I never wanted it to end this way, And I haven't been the same since you've gone away... Chorus: Maureen, oh where are you now...? Tell me, are you thinking of me somehow...? I never wanted it to end this way, And I haven't been the same since you've gone away... Copyright 1991, Ray Kim
